You can't sell anything you make with "The Movies" game. With Moviestorm you can. That's why Moviestorm will win! The Movies is just a game when it comes down to it, Moviestorm is a tool...

The contest was cancelled. However we at Moviestorm are still finishing the movie. Absolutely Moviestorm is a tool with many applications: training videos, education, commercials, storyboarding. And the graphics are beautiful.

THEY ARE!

Well, at least if you have a decent graphics card.

i think the one thing that strikes me when i come onto moviestorm is the level of support you feel from not only the community but also the program creators... i have been with the movies for a very long time, and it has aggravated me no end to feel like we were whistling in the wind in terms of getting support from lionhead.

Modders can do many things and certainly with the movies they've had to, to keep it fresh, but how good would it have been for lionhead to show support more often.

the movies has grown stale in a lot of ways, you can predict what happens next in a scene due to its limitations.

on the plus side as lucinda says it offers straight out of the box film making, which initially grabbed me, and i agree had it continued to be developed it may have reached the level were it could be considered a program rather than a game.

moviestorm when i first tried it is daunting to a "the movies" person, but gradually it becomes easier to operate, and the sense of achievement is great, but the thing were movie storm excels is that it offers a higher level of flexibility which to a movie maker cannot be overlooked.

I, too, find myself wanting a "REP" button. Must get onto this, as many posts here are worthy of respect. Thanks all

the best thing is that these forums don't have a rep button, it really is a can of worms you open with that, as rather than the good intentions it is designed with it instead becomes a huge popularity contest... or worse the conversation drys up as people do not want to say something against the popular view in fear of a derep

tmo also got filled with spam in an effort by some to gain rep for being "supportive"

tmo has just re - released the forum without rep, almost an open acknowledgment that it created more negatives than positives within their community.

i like the forum here, as it feels a lot more easy going, i wouldn't want that to change all because of a rep button

Yes, it's easy enough to let someone know that their input is appreciated. I've heard lots of folks with experience of the movies forum who hated the rep system.

Please, please don't bring the "rep" button here. It always struck me as adolescent and artificial. As stated earlier, there are plenty of sincere, subtle ways of patting someone on the back. I see it every day here. Users thank another member for an insightful post or maybe a useful link to a good internet resource.
How many threads got started on TMO by a disgruntled victim of a derep (even if it was earned)? Several angry members would respond to the thread and then a cocky moderator would lock the thread with some smug comments. Awful.
Just for the record, i had quite a few reps and one derep situation so i wasn't exactly a bad boy on the boards. My derep was for responding to a troll who was ripping on my country and simply trying to start trouble in general. I let my love of country (yeah, I get mad at my gov't too) get the better of me. Basically, I'm saying that, in my opinion, it's a flawed system and quite unnecessary for the level of maturity we have here. Let's just make and watch movies and enjoy the community, please.

I'm with you ranger21. When Moviestorm came on the scene, I left The Movies with no regrets. Both in the program and the forums. Bravo to Short Fuze!!!

ditto... it's a very down-to-Earth, friendlier nature here...
(I got dinged by a couple "necro-posts": commenting on "old" posts... I figure if you aren't supposed to comment on somthing from a previous month... that it was so bothersome to someone, they should've lock it out so you couldn't comment. Seemed overly silly to me.)

Oh please, no rep!!! I always hated it. It seemed so mean. But a good way to tell someone you appreciate what they are doing is to just tell them, reply to their messages, etc.

And people here do that. I find everyone really easy to work with and very friendly. And a lot of this has to do with the input we all have in the creation of this software. I mean, I am always thrilled to find out what someone else here has done with the software or modding. And really, the program is not that hard to learn - and let me know if anyone has questions as I have a knack for using this kind of graphics software. Hey it is such a simple program that even I can mod and I don't even know how to mod.

But it is not a "canned" product - it is up to you to write your own movies, design sets everything is up to you. There are no pre-programmed animation sequences (as of yet), but then you have no limitations. Also you can use outside 3D tools and digital photography tools to create landscapes, sets and props.

Can you point me to the thread(s) on how to do this? I found one that said don't get carried away modding yet because of impending changes to the application, but I would like to play around with introducing new textures and so on to the existing library.

Thanks!

Well, in the modding board you can find many threads helping you with that.

The Modder's workshop will soon be released, and you can make changes to all the things you want without risking the program.

As for the 3D props and stuff, you need a pretty good 3D software. Like 3DS Max (The best one out there, VERY expensive) or Blender (Free)

If you don't have the original pre-public beta edition of Moviestorm you do not as yet have the Modders Workshop. If you were part of the pre-public beta testing and have the old program, you still have the Modders Workshop. The easiest thing to do with modding is to change the various tags and attributes that go with the props - for instance, I made all the simple shapes able to take an image and be resized. That is how I made all the skyscrapers in my movie - A Day in the City. I also made just about every prop scalable - so that I could make the cars, street signs, buildings, etc. miniature. For use of these modded props in the Beta 2.0 edition, I just copy the prop and all its specifics into the proper folder on Beta 2.0. Actually the various attributes are included in a file called Descriptor which can be viewed using WINRAR and selecting VIEW.

The only props I have had problems importing into Beta 2 are the scalable cars. For some reason even though the descriptor says they are scalable, they aren't. Everything else works just fine.

I know nothing about modding and if you will look at some of my movies you will see what even I could do with Moviestorm. If the modders workshop doesn't come back soon, I could release some of the modded props to the community in general if it is allright with everyone at Moviestorm that I do this.

By the way since this is under the title "Moviestorm vs The Movies, who will win?" and even though the contest was cancelled, our entry, TANGENT is now online either here or on VEOH and Ifilm - VEOH link is
http://www.veoh.com/videos/v11110544EXFkSyh.

If you go to my VEOH link, all the movies I have made with Moviestorm with the custom backdrops and props I made are there too as well as here.

Wow...I'm surprised at how many familiar names I'm seeing here from 'movies' land...hello all

I'm very impressed with how moviestorm is developing actually.
2 or 3 months ago, I was sceptical...I mean, I know it's early days and everything is still in beta, but I wondered if all the claims made back then about regular expansion packs and such would hold true, especially after hearing those same promises made in the early days of 'the movies'...so far, so good

I have a full length movie project which I'm currently working on using 'the movies' (and featuring Lucinda's excellent VO talents incidently) but after this, I'm looking to make the big switch to moviestorm.

I think the potential here is absolutely huge and the possibilities endless...I too am drooling at the prospect of horror, western, war, action and sci-fi themes...and everything in between

I've been with TMO for almost three years now and I think the movies and the community are excellent, but being a tomorrow kind of guy, I'm hoping to hand over the crown to moviestorm one day soon.
