I put this post here to avoid posting in admin thread, mods please move if you want it somewhere else.

I've been messing about in the modder's workshop..it's amazingly simple to come up with props using the simple shapes...see the washing machine and kitchen cupboards..I also made a cooker out of shot.
(hte different colour tops were made using simple shapes merged and scaled to fit)

Lighting looks great guys! I am still geting used to the luxury of textured wallpaper.

It would be utterly fabulous is the light came just through the window....put it on the list..I think that might be item no. 3,657? ...but even without that refinement....ooh ooh ooh..skip skip

Firstly, nice looking set.

Secondly, I thought lighting DID come though windows.
Do you maybe have 'interior lighting' set on the lighting settings on the set workshop? This stops walls (and I think windows) from casting shadows.

One thing to beware of at the moment with our lighting; the shadow map is 512 pixels by 512 pixels (if I am remembering correctly what I was told), no matter how big the set is.

So if you have all your props close together (say, inside a room) the shadows will be fairly sharp. But if you increase the sise the shadow map has to cover, by for example putting some trees off in the distance, then your shadows will suffer as a result.

We are wanting to change how the shadows and lighting all work, but we havnt quite got there yet, but hopefully more knowlage of how it works at the moment will help you make things look good.

Yes, I had interior lighting switched on..this was because I had ceiling tiles on this set and the interior lighting prevented them from casting a shadow.
I will try deleting the ceiling tiles and turning interior lighting off.

I am very pleased with the shadows on the floor in this shot.

Nice work there!

I really like the washer and cupboards. The shadows are pretty interesting too. It really gives an end of day feel.

My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely.

May the Muses inspire you today.

Thanks Toriel!
It's tricky getting the worktops right, I used a simple rectangle somewhat taller than the simple cubes, and pushed it back slightly.
Havng said that I realised after I rendered the scene that I jiggled one of the worktops out of place and the washer vanished in the final cut

Ben I tried to delete the ceiling tiles and couldn't work out how to do this...the normal 'wrecking ball tool' wouldn't work for me.
Thanks for explaining the shadow mapping, these things are useful to know.

Yes, afraid ceiling tile deletion isnt currently possible (unless you want to go edit the movie xml files, which wouldnt be an ideal way). It should get added at some point again soon, I hope.

If you do, though, you can open your movie.mscope file for that movie in a text editor which formats xml (eg wordpad, which comes with windows will do).

Then look for the <ceiling> tag. Just below that will be a big grid of numbers which represent the different squares of your set; ones with numbers greater than 0 represent tiles with a ceiling texure. Change them back to 0, and the tiles go away.

It isnt an elegant solution, but if you realy need rid of some ceiling tiles, it is currently the only way to do it, untill we get around to putting something in the interface, hopefully quite soon, but not necessarily.

Great stuff, everyone. I particularly like the washing machine - a perfect example of lateral thinking using simple pieces.

Are you able to get a reflection? Or are they doubles? In any event a pretty great shot.

Very nice picture kkffoo. I am very curious, how did you get the reflection effect? We need the Wiki for sharing that kind of knowledge just now!!!

Thanks,

I think it uses doubles; from what i remember the costume for the standing hairdresser has the emblem on the left breast, which isnt reversed in the reflection, sugesting that it isnt a reflection.

Nice effect, though.

It was good enough to have me second checking your user name to see if you were one of our engineers (who at some stage might maybe go away and spend the weekend coding in mirrors, maybe. I hope).

I created the effect using doubles, the 'mirror' frame is the simple prop arch. The new 'prop' walls are butted up to the frame and also placed behind the opening to replicate a back wall.
The shelf is the pink kitchen table, turned through 90 dgrees, with a simple square prop, textured and tinted pink...scaled to fit under the table legs.
The advantage of this method over a programmed mirror is that it should be possible to do a camera shot which passes though the mirror.
If I have time this week I might try that, though anyone else please try this if you can work it out (shame we can't share sets yet).

....and my big achievement..I recoloured the pink chair
