hi guys, I've posted a few places about my problems getting moviestorm audio into sony vegas. I thought it might be handy to gather some editor issues together.

I'm just about to get hold of Vegas (been using Premiere for about 8 years), so I'll be looking at this issue myself in the next couple of weeks.

just a point: PC or Mac versions?

We've noticed that some of our codecs are rather too dark and sound is odd when rendered back on Macs.

I've been using both Premier and Vegas. I'd rather be using only Vegas for video editing with my movies if you can get that issue ironed out. (Premier reads the format put out by Moviestorm with no problems.)

I use Premiere 6.5. It won't open 1.4 files. The message reads:

Unable to open that file.
File uses an unsupported compression format.

As a workaround I use SUPER © to re-encode. SUPER © is a GUI wrapper for different video programs. I use the default, ffmpeg.

I re-encode with the following settings:

1. Output Container: AVI
2. Output Video Codec: DV Digital Video
3. Output Audio Codec: Wav-(pcm 16 little-endian)

After that process, Premiere 6.5 opens the files without a hiccup.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6.0 Platinum

It's got everything for movie editing,if you buy the whole vegas package which can cost around £500 or $800 ,it's a bit pricey, but I like the fact you can buy each and every piece of content of the vegas suite seperate,so I got the movie studio for video editing, and I bought Sound forge as well.I also managed to get XMC Acid for music creation.

Adobe after effects is supposed to be the best sfx editor out there though that isn't too expensive,I might look into that as well

There is no spoon....

Or fork for that matter....hmmm.....

I find if I import the Moviestorm AVI through Windows Movie Maker and then export it, I can load it into my Adobe Premiere. (My version of Premeire 6.5 seems to reject the original AVI file). From there I can work in Adobe Premiere and After Effects. If there is a loss of quality I can't see it, but then again I do wear Coke Bottle glasses.

mrjoyce wisely advises:

...import the Moviestorm AVI through Windows Movie Maker and then export it, I can load it into my Adobe Premier

Thanks!

That worked like a charm. The file size went up 6X (from native MovieStorm to the DV-AVI from MovieMaker 5.1). But everything works without a problem.

Would I be right in guessing that uncompressed avi would be popular then?

If that is what we are using. Computer terms are still "Greek" to me....... (I'm still one of the only people left in Hollywood that remembers making Budgets on oversize parchment papers. Also I remember arguing with those above me about using an Avid for a show. The head of post production thought it was a fad.) If Uncompressed AVI works then lets do it.

Uncompressed I believe would be the best thing for everybody involved seeing as when you rerender something multipule times, the quality lessons each time. Having a "Pure" uncondensed original copy of all the scenes would really help avoid video and playback errors (Such as sound becoming unsynced and various pixelation when converting it down to diffrent formats).
And I am sure everyone these days has at least one program to compress and conform video files into smaller sizes and or media types (Windows Movie Maker is great for compressing down huge video files into WMV format and its free).

And so we rise again...

(My 2 cents: My Adobe Premier 3.0 also loads what we have with no problem.) If Windows Movie Maker works, I certainly can't see any downside to the uncompressed avi. (Whether folks would worry about disk space, that might be a concern... but it seems most the folks here are more concerned about the quality of the output.)

Disk space is no longer relevant to most people. Larger and less expensive drives are always coming along these days.

Image quality should always be the number one priority. Uncompressed, first generation material should be used when editing. The file can always be squished down to mobile phone quality later.

The hours and days to create a piece should not be wasted by poor quality output. I sometimes use low resolution files to perform a quick experiment, but never for real work.
