Anybody out there have any hands-on time with any sort of Falling Snow FX type software? Barring that, any creative tips? I have a low budget kit that includes the Gimp, Paint Shop Pro, and Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

Thanks.

Apparently WAX, which when you install also installs itself as a vegas plugin, does particles including rain, smoke etc. That's a possible free solution to your question.

Particle illusion has great snow effects. There's a SE version for 99$. This software is definitely worth the layout, and particles are free every month.

Prodad's Adorage Effect package 9 does particles. 50 euros for the plugin.

Hope that helps!

Errrrrrrr ...

try creating a massive static greenscreen image (4096x4096) in Gimp and then seeding it with "snow" using the generate noise script. You could then slide it over the top of the footage to create the motion of it "falling".

For added realism, have 2 layers of snow at different focal lengths (fake it with blur and zoom) - it's reasonably effective. Even better, set up just the snow FX and render it out on its own so you can loop and re-use it.

Failing that, I'd cheat in the oldschool way: shoot some greenscreen footage with a real camera of something snowlike (ash? soapflakes?) and then do it in post.

Just my 2c.

Zuckerman just turned me on to this one; and like you, he highly recommends it. their home page is here - http://www.xiberpix.net/ - and they have other free softwares that does stuff like:
1. warp, bend and loop text and images
2. morph two, three or more images
3. rippling water reflections

Thanks, I'll have to say that the FREE package is what I need right now. I might check on WAX but am in a crunch so I don't have much time for comparisons.

What I'd really like is a way to make a snow flurry instead of a steady fall across the entire screen. Is that even possible or am I daydreaming?

I think Particle Illusion might be what you need for maximum control.
I've been using it for a blizzard effect, and it certainly works well.

Now you know what to ask Santa for! But if he doesn't bring you that, I remember finding a portable version somewhere on the web. I can PM the URL to you if you wish.

Creative tips... How about some falling snow inside of moviestorm?

This should demonstrate: http://www.moviestorm.co.uk/MSDB/MoviePageServlet?id=1365

a few x marks on a alpha background texture, painted onto a prop with a sliding surface.
I haven't seen snow in a very long time... as you can tell from my snow prop LOL.

Getting fancy externally: i'd agree with some that http://sqirlz-water-reflections.software.informer.com/ is a great way to get your snow falling.

How the hell did you do that and could you provide a tutorial on it, as I was thinking you could make moving backgrounds within MS such as clouds etc.

David
