Moviestorm Early Access Release

Today we present to you the next milestone in Moviestorm's development as it moves out of Beta. We're calling it the "Early Access" version (otherwise known as Moviestorm 1.0.0) as we acknowledge there are still bugs and incomplete features. But thanks to your feedback and the brilliant movies that we're seeing made in Moviestorm, we feel that Moviestorm is ready for a wider audience.

You can download it here!
(Please note we will not be patching Beta2 versions to EA nor will we be releasing any further patches to Beta2.)

Those of you who have been on the beta program for a while will know that we regularly update Moviestorm with bug fixes and new features. We'll be continuing with this as it's fundamental to our Agile development philosophy - often characterised as "Release Early, Release Often" - but more importantly, we try to respond to the bugs and feature requests that are holding you back from creating your cinematic masterpieces!

Here is a list of features since Beta 2.1.1:

New Mouse Bindings
We've made a significant change to the mouse bindings which we believe are much more useable. We advise you to check the help section for details but in short:
 * The middle mouse button is no longer used (although the scroll wheel still works as before).
 * Left mouse button now strafes around the set; right mouse still orbits
 * Left mouse button now also selects the ring menu on characters and props; right mouse button selects a character as subject or switches to the camera view
 * Shift+left mouse button is now needed to drag marks and props around the set. Ctrl+left mouse button still rotates them. You can also use the modal tools in the Set Workshop to do the same, but you won't be able to move around the set while you do so.

Interactive Tutorial
This release includes the first Interactive Tutorial: this introduces the novice to the main areas of Moviestorm and what all of the main buttons do - and, of course, where the Help is.

New AddOn Format
We are now distributing our content packs as .addon files which can be installed by simply double-clicking on them (or just "opening" them after download from your browser). If you have any problems installing that way you can also install them by starting up Moviestorm, going to the Settings page and hitting the Install button where you will be invited to select the file from where you downloaded it on disk. Please be patient as unpacking may take a little while...

If you've already got these packs, you can (if you want) go into Program Files and copy them all over from the Beta2 installation to the new installation - but please do not copy the old Base AddOn as that will confuse things.

Other features
* Many improvements to undo/redo
* Experimental two handed PointAt for John Woo action - needs more work to work well!
* Doors can now be tinted as well
* Fixed issue where tinting different walls changed all walls with the same wallpaper

New Base content
There is also a new Base pack which replaces the old base pack. The new base pack is much more coherent than the old one and our artists have polished up much of what was there before. There are also some really nice stock sets to get you started.

Since most of you will already have movies that rely on the old base pack, we're providing the old version for you to download as BaseBeta2. We strongly recommend that you place it after Base01 in your AddOn list so that new movies will use the new Base pack which is much nicer! Also please note that we will not be providing any updates to BaseBeta2.

You can get BaseBeta2 here!
(You won't need this ff you don't have any existing movies you want to keep.)

You should also note that the content packs that are currently available for free will not be so for much longer. In the next few weeks we will start charging for them as well. So please take advantage of the free offer while it lasts - this is our thank you for all of the wonderful feedback you have given us during our beta test period.

Overall we think you'll find this release a great improvement and I'm really looking forward to the next movies you make.

More news on where Moviestorm is heading soon!

I haven't been this excited since (bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep) and believe me the sheep really looked surprised, any way enough of my ramblings, I am really looking forward to using this new version and the big bonus is it has the modders workshop in it Yaahooo!, Thank you Shortfuze you guys are doing a tremendous job.

Regards
Davidwww

P.S. Just so you know my points have gone AWOL as well.
P.P.S I can't seem to find the modders workshop, did I in my excitement read this wrong, taken from the homepage news.

In addition to all that, there is the inclusion of the long awaited Modder's Workshop, that allows you to customize Moviestorm assets to better suit your individual movie-making requirements. In time, you will be able to create your own characters, sets and props, and import them into Moviestorm or share them with other Moviestorm Directors. More advanced modders will be able to write complete modifications, adding in new features, new film styles, and whatever else they can think of!

Re:Moviestorm Early Access Release

Uninstalling the old version is optional; it installed by default to C:/Program Files/Moviestorm Beta 2.
The new version will install by default to C:/Program Files/Moviestorm

It does, however, update your shortcuts to point to the new version, so if you want to continue using the old version you would have to manully make a shortcut to the old beta version.

If you've already got these packs, you can (if you want) go into Program Files and copy them all over from the Beta2 installation to the new installation - but please do not copy the old Base AddOn as that will confuse things.

Note that this will cause some problems with respect to, in particular:
the Coffee Mug animations in Domestic Drama 01 (they just wont work)
the trees in Urban Foliage 01 (no apple tree any more)
the dirty street lamp textures in Urban Exteriors 01 (missing)

For these ones to work, please download the new .addon installer files.

The old pioneer stuff may work a lot less well with the new base pack.

There is (or will be) a new version of the old base pack called Base Beta 2, to which our Beta 2 users should get licences automatically.
Once that is installed, you can go to the addon menu in Settings, and select it; it isnt a good idea to have it selected in combination with the new Base01 and Core packs, however.
Otherwise, Core containes the stuff moviestorm needs to run properly; most addons will work with just Core and that addon enabled. This is useful when you are interested in just seeing what is in a new addon pack you have just installed.
Base01 contains the other assets for the new base pack, which let you make a basic set of movies. Look for the new talking gestures (mostly in the Left hand and mirrored in the Right hand gesture menues).

I downloaded the BaseBeta2 package, and tried installing both via double-clicking and the install button on the Add-on manager, but it keeps showing up as unlicensed, although there is an entry for it in my licenses folder. A little digging shows that the BaseBeta2 folder in my Moviestorm directory does not include the ".AddOn" file that appears in other directories, including the Base01 and Core folders. Could this be related?

Also, for some reason, EA 1.0 will not load the goatee. Or the heavy mustache. Ironically, it does load the full beard, the one facial hair appliance that doesn't properly fit any of the currently available heads. I haven't attempted CPT Destroyer's variations on the goatee, it's stock as installed. And it's a signature characteristic of the leading man for the next two productions in my pipeline.

The beards have temporarily been left out of the base pack; we were somewhat unhappy about how they failed to fit the asian face. We hope to put them back in soon.

They should still work from the old base pack, although if your copy is actually missing the .addon file in the BaseBeta2 folder then it isnt going to work at all.

I've just tried the version from our server, and it is missing the .addon.

Thanks for pointing this out; we are trying to sort it out by putting the missing file in.
I'm attaching it to this post; it goes in the Moviestorm/Addons/BaseBeta2 folder (although it needs unziping).

I had my hopes up when I noticed that the watermark wasn't there in the editor (forgetting that the editor doesn't edit other renderings)... but then it reappeared again in the rendering. I (speaking only for myself) find watermarks annoying- what are the plans for people getting a "clean" copy of Moviestorm*?

(lol... "Ho ho ho"... Tom's playing Santa Clause!)

Zuckerman... the way I understood Dave's first post on this thread, you have to download a zip file that he gives there for being able to use the old movie files (after uninstalling the old beta). I'm not really sure where it should be zipped to.

(edit... I don't know for sure it's a zip file (basebeta2)... but make sure you read through this whole thread.)

thanks, fulk. i read the whole thread a few times. it's just not very clear exactly how to save the old files and use them in EA and i'm kinda terrified of screwing things up and damaging or loosing my files forever.

david, when you have a chance, could you walk me-- us-- through the process step by step?

I have both Beta2.1 and EA1.0 installed (heck, I still have Beta1.4 installed!), with no apparent problems. I re-downloaded all the content packs in the new .addon format, except for Pioneer (not available in the new format). When you install EA1, it sets up a file association for the .addon format, so double-clicking will automatically install to your EA1 directory. For the Pioneer pack, I just copied the Pioneer folder from my Beta2 AddOn directory to my EA1 AddOn directory.

The BaseBeta2 pack includes assets (props, etc.) that were left out of EA1. Without it, your old movies will still open, but you will receive error messages relating to the missing content (as with my leading man and his goatee). The initial version of BaseBeta2 was missing a file that allowed MS to recognize it as licensed content; that has since been corrected, although Ben also attached a zip containing just the missing file to an earlier post in this thread.

If you're really, really terrified of losing your old files, I'd suggest you back up your {drive}:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Moviestorm directory, which contains your licenses, movies and stock collections, before upgrading.

Re:Moviestorm Early Access Release

How to finish your old movies after installing the new EA release:

Firstly, it is important to realise that any copy of moviestorm you have installed (either a beta 2 version or the EA version) will find any movies you have been working on and have saved.
This doesnt mean that they will all work, however, without the right assets.

There is a Settings menu, which takes you to a page which says which Addons you have installed/licenced.

The new EA version comes with two entries in this list - Core and Base01.
Beta 2 used to have an entry called Base; there is a new version of this called BaseBeta2 which is downloadable as a file called BaseBeta2.addon from the my downloads page. Doubleclicking on this file (once you have EA installed) should install the old base pack as an addon.

Other Addons also now use the .addon installer files, instead of the .exe installer files they previously used. It is better to go and re-download them all from the my downloads page, as some of them have had to change slightly to work with both the new and old base packs. (IN particular: DomesticDrama01 needs to use the new .addon installer otherwise the Coffee Mug animations wont work. UrbanFoliage01 now has the apple tree that used to be in Base. UrbanExteriors01 needs to be downloaded again to get the alternate street light textures working correctly.)

Then, on the settings menu, you can choose which addons moviestorm is using.
Normally you will want Base01 and Core ticked; these are the contents of the new base pack (Base01) and some basics that moviestorm always expects to exist (Core), which were previously combined into the old Base pack. If you are going to work on an old movie, you can enable BaseBeta2 instead of Base01 and Core.
Then also tick any of the other addons you have installed and want to use.

If you want to try to use both the old and new base packs together (which is not supported), then the best way to do it would be to use the 'move up' and 'move down' buttons on the addons, so that the BaseBeta2 pack is at the bottom of the list. This means that if an asset is in both packs, the newer version in Core or Base01 will be used. A lot of assets will still appear twice on the props menu though.

If when you are loading a movie, you get an Error Switching Scene error, it might be caused by not having the right assets enabled. I would sugest NOT using the save button, and exiting moviestorm, restarting and checking which assets you have enabled.
Some movies will load dispite missing assets; you will just get a version of that movie with some props and costumes missing. Be warned, if you save that movie, you wont be able to load it again with all the assets which were missing, even if you enable them.

Re:Moviestorm Early Access Release

I like the new version a lot, however, right now I am just finishing a very complex movie with lots of complex and detailed sets (well you know how I am about sets), so I am going to go ahead and finish that movie in beta 2.0. I do love the panorama backdrop though. That is wonderful and the camera works very smoothly

It is simply a beautiful program and has been since the beginning. Since I have tested not only Antics (very expensive previx program which I own) and FrameForge (very expensive and not worth the money at all). Moviestorm is so superior to either of those, I expect Hollywood to come knocking on your door very soon. both those programs are used by movie studios for previs and storyboarding.

If anyone is experiencing the same java related problems I had you can resolve them by updating your java runtime environment to the current version (Version 6, update 3) which is a free download at:

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com:80

By updating Java, the new release works perfectly.

I downloaded all the addon packs again and have installed them in the new EA version. I also downloaded the new BetaBase 02 pack and installed that but I am still having a problem with it. It gets to the end of install and I get the following message:

unexpected end zlIb input stream

And it still shows up as unlicensed. All the other addons appear to work fine although I have not had time to play with it much. Would appreciate the help as I kind of do want to finish my latest movie in the new version of Moviestorm because the cameras work so nicely and I love the panorama backdrop.
