Moviestorm 1.1

We are very pleased to announce that Moviestorm 1.1 is now live. This is a major step forward for us and you will find much has changed with Moviestorm not least of which being the user interface. You can find out all the details in the release notes here.

If you've been using one of the preview releases, we strongly recommend that you either patch from 1.0.4 or download and re-install from scratch.

If you're using Vista, we also recommend that you re-install as Moviestorm previously relied on the XP-compatibility mode which caused problems (see the release notes for more details).

Your existing movies should continue to work with Moviestorm 1.1 but we've been cleaning house with much of the art and you will need to get the CompatibilityEA addon pack to load old movies. It can be downloaded from the Content packs button in the Launcher, in the same way as other content packs. There is a known issue with mutual animations in saved movies from 1.0.4 do not play in 1.1. You may, however, load the movie, delete the mutual animation, and add it again.

New Content Packs with 1.1
Wardrobe01, Wardrobe02 and CompatibilityEA are new content packs with the 1.1 release, but they are mainly composed of previous content.

Wardrobe01 is composed of MaleCostumes01 plus FemaleCostumes01, and only the stock characters are new.

Wardrobe02 is composed of MixedCostumes01 plus MixedCostumes02, plus the Zombie which was made available at Halloween.
It also contains these new costumes:
Male Priest (also added to MixedCostumes01)
Male Overalls
Male Motorbike Leathers
Male and Female Swimwear
And the new Fedora hat for men.

CompatibilityEA is composed of the heads and hair from prior to our head/hair updates; it is useful for old movies to maintain compatibility (otherwise characters will appear headless)
It also contains jewellery from the FemaleCostumes01 pack, whcih doesnt work with the new heads.
And it contains the antique armchair that was in the CoffeeShop pack.

Enjoy and tell your friends!
Dave

The ambient that's currently in the Base pack (And to a lesser extent the BedroomBlog, StandUp and SongContest packs) is pretty much 50/50; we had some new sounds made up, but I also had a look through the old BaseBeta2 and Pioneer packs to see if there was anything worth keeping from them. I think what's there works well with the kind of things you can make with the Base pack, and we'll eventually be adding ambient support for the other packs.

I agree with you about the coughs and scratching. It was actually a lot worse in Preview 3, and I guess that was my trial run; just listening to the movies people were making made me realise that a lot of the audio was just too damn loud. So I massively lowered the volume of all of the clothing, hair and skin scratches. Do you still think they're too audible? The coughs are another matter, though, and I understand how they can be disruptive. I actually don't really like the improv system at all, both from the standpoint that it triggers lots of unwanted sound, and because it doesn't really look in any way natural. Eventually it will be possible to control the volume of every bit of foley sound, but that's going to require quite a bit of work.

Hey Angri - the quick 'workaround' for disabling Foley sounds you don't want is to go into your main MS directory, then AddOn > Base01 > Data > Sound > Foley, and within the Character, Props and Wall Fittings sub-directories (and the respective sub-directories within THOSE), rename the sound files you don't want. Easiest rename is just to append "_DIS" to the original filename before the .mp3 extension - that way you can always change it back to the original name later, and you know it's been disabled.

If you don't want a whole folder's worth of sounds, you can just append the _DIS to the folder (directory) name instead. I've tried this with mine, and it has caused no issues. If MS can't find the soundfiles it's looking for, it doesn't freeze, it simply doesn't play them.

All the sneezes are found in: AddOn > Base01 > Data > Sound > Foley > Character > Vocal

The scratches are in: AddOn > Base01 > Data > Sound > Foley > Character > Contact

Other sounds are in various subdirectories using structure above - pretty much the only exception is footsteps, which aren't in Base01 but in Core instead. So the path to those is: AddOn > Core > Data > Sound > Foley > Footsteps

Personally I've disabled ALL my Foley sounds, because mixer isn't working properly for me. I suspect (hope ?) this may just be because I'm using a patched 1.04 (and was using 1.1 Preview 3 before) - doing a 'fresh' install of 1.1 Final this morning to see if that fixes it !

Hope this helped !

Foley sounds are still WAY too loud on my system, and mixer is glitching the same way it was in 1.1 Pre (i.e. MS seems to ignore volume settings for Foley & Dialogue which it's saved in the .mscope and/or which were tweaked manually in 'cutting room', and goes ahead and has everything turned up full volume when it renders).

Will see if the 'fresh' install of 1.1 Final I'm doing this morning fixes the glitch. If not, I guess I'll be using the 'renaming folders' workaround again to disable Foley for the time being, which I suggested to Angri above ...

@czechboysonic

That's a great suggestion, thanks! Not to appear to be knocking the Foley sounds but no matter their quality or volume, I like to dictate what happens and when. If a character looks more natural with improvs "on" in a scene, I'd rather not have to avoid that option because strange sounds pop in. Wait a second. I add sound in Post and ignore the MS audio. I guess that means that I don't care anymore about how it's implemented and shouldn't be listened to anyway.

Re:Moviestorm 1.1

Actually, one bit of feedback I've got about MS (1.1 Final AND all the previous releases from 1.04 upwards) is to do with rendering sizes.

It would go a LONG way towards having MS accepted by the 'wider' movie-making 'community' if it offered the option to natively render into some of the accepted STANDARD movie sizes (e.g. SD: 720x576 PAL & 720x480 NTSC, HD: 1440x1080 HD 1080i 25, 1280x750 HD 720p 25, full DV-AVI compliant output) rather than it's own 'custom' resolutions of 1920x1080, 1280x720, 800x450 & 640x360.

I'm not saying this something which isn't easily remedied in post - but if it rendered NATIVELY in standard resolutions (and into DV-AVI for those with 'unforgiving' format-obsessed editors like Adobe Premiere) it would reduce the risk of any 'quality loss' from resizing the original output renders in post to conform to the aformentioned 'standard' sizes.

Just a thought :)

If you decided to buy Wardrobe01 and Wardrobe02:
You would find that there were two sets of stock characters, and the costumes appear twice in your lists of costumes.
It would be useful to ensure, however, that the newer packs are higher up in the list of addons (on the settings menu), otherwise if we do future updates to them, the old versions would be used instead.

For someone with the old free packs, Wardrobe01 doesnt have new costumes, where as Wardrobe02 has a couple of new costumes and the Fedora, and might be worth buying, if you are keen.

Hmm, I don't think the 8400 should have much trouble running Moviestorm with Shaders. Ah, crap.. Being both a QA and an Audio guy, I really should have spotted this one.. There are actually two bugs here; firstly the audio changes you make in the Director's View aren't being carried over to the cutting room very well (You have to save/reload before they're recognised), and secondly they're being ignored when the movie is rendered, anyway. Thanks for pointing this out, and apologies for doing a shoddy job in the first place!

Heh ... shows you how much I know ;) Yeah ... the 1280x720 was a 'misread' on my part of HDV 720p 25 spec (coz that's what it's supposed to be, not 1280x750 as I thought), and 1920x1080 is 1080p, 640x360 is Web640x HD (apparently), but I'll be stuffed if I can figure out what 800x450 is ?

Just goes to show you there are WAY too many 'standard' sizes out there !

Oops, it appears to be very badly broken. I would imagine that we will try to get it fixed as soon as possible.

It appears that the only way to edit a different camera is to go to the cutting room, and add that camera to the scene. Then, when one goes back to the directors view, any attempt to go to the camera view ends up in that camera, rather than the previous main camera.
Obviously this is a big problem if you want to edit the scene too.

Edit:
If you have edited a scene in the cutting room, one can change which camera one ends up in by positioning the timeline over a section where the desired camera is active, and going to the camera view.

The 1.1 version is awesome, but the urban foliage and urban exteriors pack were the most important packs for a set. Without these packs is hard to build a good set. But the old packs that I have downloaded, like the zombie pack and the mixed costumes packs, do they work on the 1.1 version or we all must spend 39 USD for buying another times the content packs?

No offense dude. But i have no intention of messing about with complex ways of doing something that should be easy to do in the camera screen. Its a complete waste of my time. I'm using moviestorm to previz a very imprtant project (i used the last version on another project and it was amazing) but i'm not going to use it at all if its not functioning properly and will instead find some other way. I would very much appreciate a proper and permenant fix for this issue.

Re:Moviestorm 1.1

The following is the biggest problem I am having with 1.1 in comparison to the older version and that is speed of the program and crashes.

This only happens when I have large groups of puppets in a large set. I have not figured out if it is the complexity of the set or the number of gesturing puppets that is the problem. I will try to figure this one out. You know how I love big, elaborate, complex sets with lots of puppets.

When I did the Friday Night - The Races video I had a large number of puppets dancing and running. I had no glitches. I also had a rather large elaborate set. When I did my autobiography I also had large sets with lots of puppets, all running, walking, gesturing and had no problem.

Currently I am working on Starship Feepay and the only set and scene I have had problems with is one of the Holodeck set - it is a large outdoor set. Although I have a lot of puppets - about 30 in it, I do not think that is the problem. The problem I had was when I had a set of puppets dancing and also two musicians playing instruments. When I redid the scene without those two elements, it ran great, no matter how elaborate the gestures or use of props was.

I think the glitches may come from using musical instruments. What happened is although I managed to get all the actors doing what I wanted and get the scene set up - which was only a 30 - 40 second scene, I got to the camera view and my cameras kept disappearing -- the little tick marks for the cameras were just not there. I finally was able to get to the cutting room even without the tic marks and the camera was there, but it locked up when I tried to go to the rendering view. I cut out all gestures and movement of all puppets but the dancers and musicians and still the same glitch. When I redid it by starting a new movie with the same set, it was fine but I did not add musicians or dancers.

Today I am going to try a new scene with the same set with just dancers and see if that works. Then I will add musicians and see how that works. I didn't have any dialogue or music in either of these scenes as I add that in my film editor after rendering so it wasn't a sound bug.

Let me know, Moviestorm staff your thoughts on this. I really appreciate it as big scenes with lots of puppets is kind of the thing I really like in my movies.
