What do you want to make?

Moviestorm can potentially allow you to make almost any kind of movie, and we're all intrigued to find out what you guys, our users, will want to do with it. So, what kind of movie would you most like to make? Are you interested in making short comedies in the vein of Python or Little Britain? Do you fancy yourself creating the next great MTV hit? Do you aspire to making full-length films, or perhaps creating an episodic series? Do you want to recreate Casablanca in machinima? Or perhaps you want to create a video blog and send it to your mates. Or perhaps (and this is what we're all dying to find out) you want to do something totally, completely, gobsmackingly new.

Cheers,

What do you want to make?

Hey Matt,

I just found out about moviestorm two weeks ago, and I'm going out of my mind about it!

I'm a traditionally trained filmmaker. I have an MFA from the New York University film program and that whole thing. Anyway, I have spent the last few years writing. To date, I now have nine feature length screenplays, and forty-two treatments (story ideas).

I'm ready to go into production! The problem is that my stories are fairly epic in scope. I can't just pick up a HDV camcorder and start shooting scenes with my friends. I need moviestorm! Where is it? Oh moviestorm...you cock-tease.

Is there any way I can be put on as a beta tester? I know it's a lot to ask, but I'm new to this site. If given a chance to beta test this software, I will make a kick-ass feature film with it. I want to use moviestorm so much...I have a diamond smasher in my pants.

Hey Matt,

I am just looking for maybe three or four more characters types to choose from. I need younger in their early 30's males and maybe another female. I also I would like to have maybe one or two be pre-teen age, but I can work around that if need be.

The movie that I have in mind does have a large cast, but I am learning to use what I have and so far what I have is great.

I know that you guys are working hard on this program and it shows. Keep up all the good(great) work.

Thanks,

I have never made a movie, or film, I've taken very few photographs. I'm a live performance technician by preference, sound engineer and some lighting. I have worked for over 3000 performances to date, almost always one night stands. I have no real coding experience.

The film I want to make will feature: corn-circles; rabbits; an egg-whisk; time-travel; a (high speed) punt chase; an elite (covert) 'military' unit; simultaneous picnics; chimpanzees; bridge hopping; aliens (greys); Jennifer Aniston and Tori Amos.

Working title is: "12 Herrings (red)"

I have absolutely no idea of how to go about this.
I understand the concept of 'learning-curve'.
Do you still need beta-testers? and what would that entail?

Re:What do you want to make?

There are two uses I'd like to put Moviestorm to. The first is in creating the end product itself - short episodic works, mostly comedies. The second is to create selling tools for traditional works - proof of concept and animatics for television series and feature films.

The biggest drawback to traditional media is the time and effort it takes to get anything done. It is brutally expensive so there won't be a time when it will be quick and easy by any definition. This frustrates me creatively since I want to create rather than spend 90% of my time setting things up so that I can create. The ability to create without the need for a huge supporting infrastructure would be liberating. I have several projects that would fit in here and could be done in a limited time and with no budget to speak of.

But those big budget traditional media productions are worthwhile goals since they provide a polish and scope that can't be replicated by a single person... at least until we find a cure for old age. Thousands of man (and woman) hours go into those productions and it shows. If I can create something with Moviestorm that can help sell the idea that would be beyond great.

So the goals are to create my personal works with the aim of putting them up on the web and potentially into cell phones (maybe getting a few $ there) while building the skill sets needed to create engaging animatics that will sell the big pictures... and it should also replace storyboarding once into preproduction.

I am itching to get my hands on this program.

I am wanting to make a series of 13 11 minute eps for tv/cable distribution called ShadowChildren (www.bntfilms.com), a horror/drama. I have 3 eps made using a software called The Movies, a tycoon style game that has the abitity to make short machinima movies.

I would restart the series, and fix a few things that The Movies wasn't able to do, as well as move on to other projects like reanimating "Armageddon Blues" for showing at film festivals, and also "Running with the Wind". Both of these are based on stories I have published, the second I received word of acceptance just today.

After that series, there is "Circus Maximus" based on an unfinished novel that would make another good series of 13 11 minutes eps. Also a space/western/vampire film currently called "The Missionary" and a scifi thriller called "Memories in a Bottle".

So as you can see, I have a busy schedule. :)

For one, I could sell the series. I already lost a deal to redo it because the company involved didn't want to fund a series from scratch and with The Movies' liscence there can be no profit made from it.

There is also a scene in part 1 where Pachacoti is beheading Virgil. I got lucky in being able to get that done, but there bar was supposed to be full of vampires and Pachacoti was going an a 'killing spree'.

Another thing is that there is little relative control of the puppets there. IE there are scenes of a puppet walking from point A to point B, but I can't control where those points are.

Worst of all, those puppets are HAMS! On the occasions I do get a choice, I usually have to pick 'neutral' for their emotional response. Everything else makes them like they are doing a bad Jim Carrey impersonation.

If you've seen my movies don't let them fool you. I know they look good. I worked like a dog to get them that way. Look instead at movies.lionhead.com for other people's examples of The Movies.

-A sci-fi/action series called War Game about a virtual reality MMO

-A comedy series that is a parody of Soap Operas

I am sure that the music video problem is a copyright one, not purely an upload one. Only youtube is not bothering to screen for copyright violations that I am aware of.

I point this out because the promised lawsuits for copyright infringment are looming ever closer. Yeah I am aware of the copywright issues asnd the reasoning behind Lionhead not allowing me to post on thier site...which is fine. But to me it's insane if anyone who makes a music video just for the fact they love a song and want to show their interpretation of the song in video form would cause someone to get sued. Would it be the person who made it getting into trouble or Youtube itself? It's just a shame artisit/record companies would do such a thing if no money is being made by the creator.

Aye, but that's the world we live in.

In copyright cases, the copyright holder has the right to go after anyone and everyone involved in the copyright, so that'd be both you and YouTube. (YouTube have more money than you, so there's a chance of the record company actually getting some money out of them, but YouTube have better lawyers than you, so there's less chance of winning.) Oh, and then, of course, YouTube could sue you for damages. Copyright law is a lawyer's paradise.......

Incidentally, it's not making a video of your favourite song that'll get you sued. It's publishing it that the record companies object to. Even if you don't make any money out of it yourself, someone else might do - YouTube collect ad money, for example - and the guy who owns the rights to the song is getting nothing at all.

Hunt down some Creative Commons music and use that - it sidesteps all the copyright issues! :)

There is a thing called 'exclusive right", if one doesn't protect it, one risks losing it. The trademark name 'aspirin' is an example. take a look at http://www.rexx.com/~jaguar/copyright.html for a good explanation of a lot of copyright questions.

Technically, YouTube wants to say that the uploader is fully responsible, which means that YouTube can get the adverising revenue, while the uploader gets the hit for copyright violation. I don't think it'll work since YouTube's financial gain is easily shown in the banner ads.

What do you want to make?

I gotta agree with Toriel on this one... I wanted to multi-select many (if not ALL) of the options.

NO FAIR! ;)

I guess "Other" will have to suffice. Each movie I make (barring the sequel to 'Underpants Man' that I'm working on now ;) ) is usually different to the one I made before it. I enjoy breaking my own 'boundaries', as it were.

I use 'The Movies' (hi guys from TMO, I can SEEeeee YOUuuuuuu!) and have been unable to work out a way to make this ONE PARTICULAR story (series, really) that I've been tinkering on for YEARS (as a series of short stories that I never finish!)

I need fantasy stuff... and children. My main character in this 'story' (the first one, anyway) is a young boy. I simply CANNOT do the story justice in 'TM' using an adult actor.

So anyway, apart from waffling on about my stuff, I really cannot select just ONE thing. I want to do LOTS of things... and in no particular order!

I agree with most everything (re: The Movies) I've read... I answered "Full-length drama / action / comedy" because it was probably closest to how I think... (I would like full-length sci-fi / action /comedy... that would do me WELL!

I would like to have the ability to make something a couple hours... able to swell music in and out... and chose where in a music file to start and end... and easily place animations within the movie.

Reading that you would periodically come up with upgrades just jazzed me!

I'm anxious for this product!!!

Moviestorm can potentially allow you to make almost any kind of movie

The things that attract me to moviestorm are the licensing issues, smooth camera moves, easy lip synching & I am sure there will be many other features I have yet to discover.
I don't expect at the current state of development for there to hugely adaptable sets, (or gigabytes of props) that's not realistic...
..but just how adaptable is this going to be?

Are we going to be able to make our own clothes and curtains?
Will there be animated hair?
Will there be dancing / cleaning the bathroom / paying the milkman animations?
Will there be children / babies/ dogs/ elephants?
Can I make a circus film with acrobats?
Could I have a fight on an airship and have one of the characters fall into the sea and have him sink down through an underwater kingdom complete with sharks and a Britney Spears Mermaid?

Will the characters be able to cook, eat ice cream, jump on a trampoline?

Almost any kind of movie?
Are you sure?

Re:What do you want to make?

Good list, very thought provoking.

The real issue is "how much effort and cost should we apply to providing solutions that have one, narrow, specific application for a 5 second scene as opposed to first creating general and flexible solutions that have applications in scenes that account for over 90% of screen minutes in the top 10 genres?"

the other REALLY important question is: how fast will modders take this up and do stuff for you ;-)

So, breaking the iron rule of "never tell anyone what you are planning on because you always look like a fool when something changes", here I go:

q: Are we going to be able to make our own clothes and curtains?
A: textures yes, animation and cloth physics unlikely in immediate (1 yr) horizon

q: Will there be animated hair?
A: unlikely to be physics based in immediate horizon, also might require a rethink of our base spec hardware :-)

q: Will there be dancing / cleaning the bathroom / paying the milkman animations?
A: yes and pretty well immediately, probably in next couple of months, perhaps depends on demand

q: Will there be children / babies/ dogs/ elephants?
A: teenagers first, then younger (but with fewer animations), animals perhaps later this year but depends on demand

q: Can I make a circus film with acrobats?
A:animated, perhaps next year, but unlikely to be physics based in immediate horizon

q: Could I have a fight on an airship and have one of the characters fall into the sea and have him sink down through an underwater kingdom complete with sharks and a Britney Spears Mermaid?
A: what are you smoking, man? :-)

The last one is quite interesting in itself: it you wanted it all in one set with one camera and one take, probably not. Could you edit a series of scenes together to fake most of it? probably yes, in a year. Water environments are not planned, but painted backdrops are ...

q: Will the characters be able to cook, eat ice cream, jump on a
trampoline?
A: yes and really quite soon, yes (well, "eat"), and probably not in the immediate future

I still think the original answer was fair, almost any genre will be possible, but there will always be a reasonable limit on the specific sets and actions that are available. That limit will get bigger and bigger as we ship more and more content and as modders get involved. Our props list is already destined for "several gigabytes", and that is before we involve modders, sponsors, commercial partners and IPR owners.

Did that help?

Am I going to look like fool when the future changes everything?

Re:What do you want to make?

Wow, that's actually a lot more than I expected.

how fast will modders take this up and do stuff for you

That's a question I've been asking myself.

Textures:
this is good news, will you provide guides for recolouring?

Animated hair (and cloth):
I have been impressed by the animated custom content created by the community for second life, though I am not desperately disappointed not to have this here (yet)

Animations for characters: I agree with the 90% statement...it is much better to have a range of basic animations, so long as these can be performed in any part of the set and with a variety of props it's amazing how one thing can end up looking like another.

The airship and the underwater scene:
It's not necessary to have these things for real, just be able to fake it somehow. The sims works very badly looking 'up' & I spent a lot of time trying to create an airship scene that I had to bin in the end because of graphical issues.
Underwater... fake underwater swimming against a painted backdrop would be great.
The best program I have for underwater machnima is roller coaster world but the in game characters will only swim on the surface.

There are always technical issues to solve but your answer has surprised me, I did wonder if this program was simply going to be a more adaptable version of "the movies"..which would be a good thing in itself..but it sounds as if you have much more planned than that.

Even if some of it doesn't come about...or takes longer than planned this is such a worthwhile project :)

I'm not sure about the Britney Spears mermaid bit; the "limits of taste" bot might just kick in at that point. But as it happens, yes, I do want to have fights on airships - it's a particular sweet spot for me. I really fancy making a Sky Captain / Indiana Jones / LXG type adventure movie, and I gotta have airships for that! And underwater kingdom, yeah, why not? If we can do airships, we can do sharks.

Having said that, here are my two get-outs. ;) Firstly, I'm not claiming we'll be able to do this with the initial release of Moviestorm. It'll take time to get all that in, and we've got a lot of features in the Moviestorm Master Plan. And secondly, you may have to be a bit creative with what you show and how. Some shots would require "real" 3D animation to get, and machinima just won't cut it; there are some fundamental limitations to what we can do with machinima. However, with some lateral thought, some custom assets, clever use of back-projection and/or blue-screen, plus cunning editing, you can make the viewer "see" things that aren't on the screen, and you can tell the story you want.

I hope there will be a category for drama. I always have to put my movies in the Romance genre when they aren't well - like romance novels - they are human dramas about people's relationships. And I am branching out into full stories with drama, love, action, mystery all wrapped up in one movie. Kind of like real life.

I write very long, complex scripts with a lot of intertwined characters so I expect to make full length feature films. As long as you have freecam and the ability to make the characters facial expressions and body language the way I want, I will be happy.

Ii also like dance a lot so I would love to be able to create some choreography. Good lighting effects, good sets and a variety of sets or the ability to customize my own sets is important to me. I have done a lot with this even with the Movies limited software already.

basic choreography is already surprisingly easy (you can create custom moves and string them together, then cut cameras to create a visual rhythm), and we will follow up in later versions with more advanced choreography support and tools to work with music more easily

crowds will probably be smaller to start with, and depend a lot on your hardware. there is some talk about "crowd generators", but its still a theory, not in the code

To be honest, its one thing that I do not control. A beta release comes out when our wonderful Head of QA says that it is good enough, which is after Matt, the CTO, and the Director of Art all say it is finished.

We've gone from a couple of guys in a bedroom to 14 people in a great little team in just 6 months, and we now have such luxuries as documented quality controls on releases. We have also gone from about 4 users to nearly 400 interested people, so we owe it to all of you to take serious care over releases.

I left them at about 16:30 UK time with it going into testing. If it passes, it comes out. If it fails, it won't (and there will be weeping).

So, bear with us. We love the enthusiasm, but we do not want to screw up by rushing anything, ever.

Oh, wait, Dave the CTO says "it is uploading to the server somewhere Germany now and will appear globally by technomagic about tomorrow lunch time". So, there. Now you know. :P

Re:What do you want to make?

Hi:

First of all, I think you're doing a great job but, and MS is a nice tool, but I'm not sure if it wil be really useful for making movies :-( Let's me explain (I hope I can do it, and sorry in advance for my English and also if this post is too long)

I am a script writer, so my approach/opinion to the making movies' software is as normal user, not and expert. Until now the contacts to this kind of software was 3D Studio, Blender and Flash for 2D. Of course 3DStudio and Blender are great, but they need a lot of effort and, as many people, I started to look for an alternative and I found it last year with the name of Machinima (late I know :-(). Just when I started to think seriously in Machinima it appears MS, great! My first contact was tying basic things, it rocks! But now I'm trying to do something real (just a couple of minutes with a real script) and I am totally frustrated. Probably some of the things are my fault, I don't know the tool too well, but others are from the approach. This IA engine is its strongness (it makes the filming process a lot easier and faster) but also its weakness an(why he is doing that? whay can't I change that?). Of course MS will become better and better and some of the problems will be solved, but certainly introducing more and more complexity.... and then we're in Blender again!! So, which is your approach on that? Are you sure MS can become in a real movie making tool for making more things that just get some fun?

Other things that worried me and I see has been posted in this forum by other people. Why Java? I love Java, I am a Java developer for more than 10 years, I know that it's more powerful in graphics than before but.... is this the right language for this kind of applications? We'll see.

MS's future. As I have said before I have almost no experience with 3D movie making tools but, thanks to this forum, I know now that there is a lot of software out of there (that's evident, but I just didn't know it): iClone, TM,.... and I see also that they have failed in a certain way. So, if I am going to take some money and a lot of my time in MS, how can I be sure this is a good investment? Sorry, but I'm doubting...

Finally, I'm not sure if these are my real thoughts or I'm just having a bad day

Thanks,

Isi,

Step back and take a deep breath. You have the right passion to make this work.

You as a writer should know that the craft of writing takes sometime to achieve the results you may want. Imagine writing all your life with a typewriter and now trying to sit down to a writing program instead of a machine made of keys and ribbon.. The tool can become overwhelming. I remember reading that Ray Bradbury still writes at a typewriter (I don?t know if the computer is overwhelming to him or not ? but remember this is a man that doesn?t drive a car ? in Los Angeles no less).

You say you are a Java developer. Well the only Java I can begin to understand today is a cup of coffee. That puts you miles beyond me in using Java. But Java is obviously important to my graphic problems ? so now I have to sit down and understand how it works and effects my work.

What I?m trying to say is give it time. Moviestorm is still growing, but even in this Beta stage it still works much better than a lot of other tools. I feel that this is the ?real? next generation of a Machinima tool.

I see that MS is certainly a nice tool but I am a little bit affraid to put a lot of effort in a tool that finally ends is nothing; I have lived this kind of situations several times with other tools. I don't know,... I am not 100% sure if this Machinima approach will allow us to make something more than just fun!

Don't take me too seriously!

I've wanted to make a fantasy full length feature. I've developed the story(15 years ago! ugh I'm old) but the opportunity was never available. :(

When I read about The Movies from Lionhead I thought it would be my chance. It was a great start but poorly supported and very restrictive.
Especially in a medieval or fantasy setting.

Upon reading Moviestorm's features and company support(hopefully longterm... ), I'm looking forward to beta testing this possibility.

It looks as though the designers have taken the right steps so far making it a movie-making based program. And I am anxious to see the power and potential this program may have.

I have always had an active imagination but lacking drawing or musical skills that left my outlet as just writing. And, to me anyway, it always lacked a punch.

Who knows this may be a step closer to being another way for people to express themselves as they want.

So far, I've managed to find creative ways around the lack of assets, and I hope to continue along those lines. It's a challenge, but its been fun.

The plan is to work in short segments and piece it together.

This project is now basically complete with some additional dialog and other tweaks to come.

I love what you said - about the typewriter. My stepfather, Ed Decker who was a writer and an artist (he is now deceased) would only use his very old royal portable typewriter. He wrote a lot of stories and some plays and I plan to produce them as movies as they have never been done. He hated computers, but now his plays will be on the internet for everyone to enjoy. Anyway this reminded me of him and makes me miss him.

As far as what you can do with Moviestorm at this stage, I feel I am getting wonderful results. It just takes a lot of learning.
