several IMPORTANT questions about MOVIESTORM! (Moviestorm or antics3d?)

Hi!
First of all - excuse me for my bad English.
I have several questions to MOVIESTORM creators:

1. Do you have some screenshots of MOVIESTORM interface?

2. At the present moment this program is more functionable than Antics3d?
For me Antics is a little bit slow in use, expecially the way of creating rooms and something like that. I need to create the set quickly. Like in the games but not in 3d packages...

3. When the public beta is coming?

4. I am a filmdirector, so I need some soft for storyboards.Iam not 3d designer and want something like Sims but with the possibility to place cameras in the scene.
So - does Moviestorm is good for me?

Thank you.

Hi Direction,

I don't understand what you mean by "screenshots of the interface"? If you mean examples of its product, you can check out some little movies folks have been doing so far in the following (public) thread:

http://www.moviestorm.co.uk/forum/forums/show/19.page

Other than that, I think we (beta testers) might be a little "hobbled" by our beta agreement as to what we can show?

I hope this helps?
(I agree with crule, it's a cool program! (and I'm not a 3d designer, either!))

A dont mean - examples of the movies!
These examples ARE SAME in antics3d, realviz storyviz or in 3ds max!!!
Movies are same but the WAY of CREATING is different!

I want to see MOVIESTORM inside and I want to understand -
is it a game like Sims?
Or it is like editing program (after effects)?
Or maybe just a black screen with some codes in C++ but for camera zooming, actors moving etc.

I want to SEE HOW this is working!
Maybe (if it is not a public info) you send me private message or it is also prohibited?

Re:several IMPORTANT questions about MOVIESTORM! (Moviestorm or antics3d?)

It's machinima movie-making software... not a game like "The Movies" or "The Sims". I don't know anything about antics3d, realviz, storyviz or 3ds max.

You have characters that you place on a grid (which you decorate with props), (maybe a little like you see on the holodeck on a Star Trek TNG episode?) and they execute instructions that you give them (walk to such place... say something to someone... ). You add the soundtrack and dialog and lighting... you create the camera shots (zooms/pans/orbits) from any angle, you really "play" director. You don't have to be a modder to work this program... there isn't a very steep learning curve... like I mentioned, I'm not a 3d modder, just an average computer user, and I'm not having any troubles using it.

What I would suggest, if you want to see more, is to sign up as a beta tester at this thread (I don't know for sure, but I think they are still accepting applications?):
http://www.moviestorm.co.uk/forum/posts/list/225/284.page

When it releases publicly, it will be free (I believe in Aug/Sept or so?), so the price is right for someone who wants to test it out.

several IMPORTANT questions about MOVIESTORM! (Moviestorm or antics3d?)

If you are signed up as a Beta tester then you can dive as deep as we all have into the program.

Moviestorm is not a game like Sims or The Movies. I have no real understanding or enjoyment in playing even those games. Moviestorm is foremost a tool. Just like After Effects is a Post Production tool or Final Draft is a writing tool.

Moviestorm gives the film maker the ability to create sets. create characters and dress them and then basically film the setups in a computer enviroment. If you know how a live action film is made, the same type of tools are (or will be) available in Moviestorm. It has the ability to be Modded, but it is not a blasck screen which requires the film maker to work in computer languages and code.

The end result of using Moviestorm for me is to render indivdual camera setups and then load those into my editing program and finish the film in post production.

If this doesn't help then perhaps someone at Short Fuze can send you more information or you can wait for the Public Beta version of Moviestorm to be released in the next few weeks.

Re:several IMPORTANT questions about MOVIESTORM! (Moviestorm or antics3d?)

It is like the moviemaking part of The Movies but with more options.

You select your actors and dress them up.

Contrary to TM, you have to build your sets yourself. They are not premade (but I heard there will be some that will be available). You select where the walls are, what color etc... You can also add props and set dressing like in TM.

Unlike TM, you decide what the actors do and where they go. There are no premade scenes. You click on an actor and you select actions from a gestures menu. You can select a series of gestures and put them one after the other. You also select the movement of the actor. It is as simple as clicking on the floor to where you want him/her to go. You can also select different kinds of walks.

The cameras are similar to the free cam mode but with even more possibilities. You can have more than 1 camera in a scene and you can switch between them.

I would say that it's a tiny bit harder to learn than TM because there are a lot more options to choose from.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you so much!!
I read your posts and also look at your links and find a youtube video "moviestorm tutor" which helps me to understand what it is!!!
Really VERY interesting program! Hope to see free demo soon.
And what do you think about antics? I think moviestorm and antics are both going at the same way.
1/ creating set
2 hero
3 placing camera
editing
Maybe someone tried the antics demo http://www.antics3d.com/default.asp?page=1122&section=138
or just look at tutor http://www.antics3d.com/default.asp?section=142&page=839
and helps me to understand - what advantages Moviestorm has.
I think the best way to improve the soft is to look at others mistakes.
And this discussion is very interesting for me because I try to find the soft which is better for my needs.

I took a quick look at some of the tutorials at Antics, and I agree with you that they seem to be going very much the same way as Moviestorm; ... but boy, that initial outlay ($600?) and subscription rate ($200 p/yr) is a bit of a (BIG) turn-off for me!

Moviestorm will be putting out content packs in the neighborhood of $10 to $15, and just makes a LOT more sense for someone like me to go for the much less expensive product.

(I think Short Fuze (Moviestorm) will be giving me the product I want and can use for a lot less.)

I'm glad you found that little tutorial by revdoug in the link I gave you. I think it gives a good brief show of how you go about creating your movies with Moviestorm... and how easy it is.

(Be watching for the release of the book, "Machinima For Dummies"... Moviestorm will be shipping with the book, and the book will have a chapter dedicated to Moviestorm. http://www.machinimafordummies.com/)

Re:several IMPORTANT questions about MOVIESTORM! (Moviestorm or antics3d?)

Well, if you look at Antics, the character animations are very rough. This doesn't matter as the output is only for previsualistion, not public viewing. Moviestorm, however, is designed to produce films for public consumption, so they have to take time to make things work right which means they'll probably have less material, just of a better quality.

So it's a question of breadth vs depth; quantity vs quality. Chose what suits you better.

So tell me about creative side of the Moviestorm. It is really important and interesting for me.

I am glad you brought this up because I tried the trial version of Antics and I was on the verge of purchasing it when Moviestorm came along. Thank you Moviestorm for saving me a LOT of money - $800 as a matter of fact.

Moviestorm even in the beta version is far superior to Antics in every way. It is easier to use, the registration is finer, the camera work is much better and the animations are better already. The set design and modding is unlimited. The sets are much, much larger.

Believe me, I know because I have been searching for a good movie making tool for a long time. You are going to be amazed with the ability of this program.

I don't know enough about computer hardware to know if Moviestorm will run on your computer, however, if you an run Antics, you probably can run Moviestorm.

As far as any comparison to Antics and Moviestorm by viewing Antics tutorial, the Antics tutorial shows a lot more than the program can actually do and Moviestorm is easier to use. With Moviestorm, what you see is what you get - it lives up to the hype and it is great. You will not be disappointed.

Yes do give us links to any other software of this kind that you have found. I have also tried Iclone but again, it was a disappointment to me. It looks great with the tutorials, but that is because the tutorials had some great Caligari scenes, but when you try the program, all you an do is put your charaters on a preselected background.

So all things in Antics are connect between each other and thats good! extremely good!
Other thing - you say about price.
They have a proposal - 1 year for 200. It is better than 800.
The bad thing is that I made my set all DAY long. And I want to create easy scenes with just a few clicks, like in Sims. Maybe for now - only construction things (like building house for my "actors").
I like Antics style of directing actors and OK, I agree with spending some time with it, but first of all, I want to build the set quickly and that is really important.
p.s.
If I want that my actor is running exept of walking - how to make this in moviestorm?
And if I want to drive a car, open the door - is it possible and how?

Running/jogging are part of the walk cycles. Once you give a puppet a mark, you can adjust his/her gait from a limp, to a weary shuffle, to a jog, to a run.

Vehicles are static props at the moment. Car-shaped sculptures, basically. You can't direct a puppet to get in and drive one... YET.
