IMPORTANT NOTE
These instructions are no longer needed. The latest Moviestorm installer for OSX contains the nVIDIA Cg Toolkit version 3, which installs on Snow Leopard with a simple double-click. There is no need to follow the steps in this post any more. They are left here purely for reference.
__________________________

If you're installing Moviestorm for the first time on a Mac running Snow Leopard (the latest version of Apple's OSX at the time of writing) you might have run into some problems with the installer for NVIDIA's Cg Toolkit.

The Cg Toolkit needs to be installed before you install Moviestorm on your Mac. Unfortunately, the current Cg installer (version 2.2.006) does not install correctly under Snow Leopard. As this thread on NVIDIA's forums details, this is a known issue with the Cg installer under Snow Leopard.

Hopefully, a new version of the Cg installer will be released very soon, which should alleviate these problems. Until then, here's the simple workaround:

  • Download the Moviestorm For Mac .dmg file, and mount it (by double-clicking the file).
  • Open a Terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
  • In the terminal window, type (all on one line)
    cd /Volumes/Moviestorm/Cg-2.2.0010.app/Contents/Resources/Installer\ Items

    (where 'Moviestorm' is the name of the mounted dmg image).
  • Now type
    sudo tar xfzC NVIDIA_Cg.tgz /
    (that's case-sensitive)
  • You'll be prompted for your admin password - enter it in the Terminal window and press Enter.
  • The various files and libraries that constitute the Cg Toolkit will be copied to various places on your harddrive. It should only take a few seconds. You won't see anything happen on your screen.
  • Type
    cginfo
    to determine the version of Cg that's now installed. If your results look something like this, then everything's gone swimmingly:
    Library = /Library/Frameworks/Cg.framework/Cg
    Version = 2.2.0010
    cgGetString = 0x10022c080
  • Once the installation is complete, you can drag the Moviestorm application to your Applications folder and run it from there.

Sorry that you have to delve into the dark depths of the command line - once a new version of the Cg Toolkit installer is released, we'll update these instructions (and the Moviestorm installation image!).

Here's what your Terminal will look like (roughly) when you've done everything correctly:

I had to do su at prompt to be able to go to the folder where Volumes was present. Don't know if there is an easier way to do the relative path, not very skilled at CLI land.

Regards,

Joel

Are there any problems with the NVIDIA CG Toolkit on the regular Leopard (MAC 10.5) application? I run Moviestorm and it tells me I have an issue where I need OPENGL 1.4 but it says I only have OPENGL 1.2 on my Macbook.

Did you log in?
Did it finished downloading and installing Core and your content packs?
Either of these would stop the start button from being enabled.

You can easily find out which version of OS X you're running. Just click the Apple icon in the very top left of the screen, and from the drop-down menu that appears choose About This Mac. The screen that appears will list your Version number (along with other information). If you're running Snow Leopard, the Version will start with 10.6.

Here are the version numbers for the last few OS X releases:
  • Mac OS X v10.0 "Cheetah"
  • Mac OS X v10.1 "Puma"
  • Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar"
  • Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther"
  • Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger"
  • Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard"
  • Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard"

It's also easy to find out if you have a copy of the CG Toolkit installed. Just open a Terminal (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app) and type
cginfo
If that command returns anything other than an error, the CG Toolkit is installed.

Maybe the original file is corrupted? There has been an update to the software last week, so it may be worth downloading the latest version and trying again.

Johnnie, would you like a very short shell script to do both these steps for folks who are installing the app? It would be very quick...

Sure - a shell script would be very useful. Thanks!

The latest Moviestorm installer dmg contains a version of the nVIDIA toolkit which will makes the installation process for Snow Leopard users much simpler. Just double-click and away you go. I'd recommend downloading the installer again and trying the new version.

I'll update my original post to reflect this.
