Hi
I´m considering making a competition in the future. However, it seems to me that there is either a lot of participants or none (or maybe one) in some of the previous competitions. So I want to know why. Please answer as good as you can and comment to give better insight on your perspective and if there is something I left out or good for me to know.

Thanks

Keith

I know when I did my Make Me Laugh contest, I did not have a lot of entries and the prize was a full year subscription to Moviestorm which is about $100. And I used all outside judges, professionals, writers, film makers and such so it would be fair.

Having run a competition for a few years now (yes it will be back in 2012), you cannot ever predict what kind of success you will have. Although prizes do matter to some, it is more the theme and rules that capture the attention of most who want to participate.

You have to make it something they want to do. Either have it as narrow as possible as far as rules, guidelines and theme or have something that can be considered narrow themewise that can be broadly interpreted.

Example: the 2010 Passion Competition used the 7 Deadly Sins. You had to use 2 or more of the sins in your film. Pretty narrow on the theme specifically but with the use of 7 sins in any combination of 2 or more, it gave a broad spectrum. It gave roughly 50-100 choices but was still limited to a central theme.

No matter what, some will do it just for the prizes, some will do it to test themselves, some will do it just for the fun of it. Just make sure you think it out, define any specifics that you need to and hope for the best.

with my First competition and the feed back I received back form it. one of the biggest factors that keep some people from entering was clarity of the rules, If your rules are to simple, some people may not be interested as it may not be challenging enough , how ever the reverse of That merits the same results If your rules are to strict or challenging, at the fear of being eliminated or disqualified for of an entry that may take a fair bit of time to make, and so not enter! so the part of the trick is to find the balance between "Challenging" and "simplicity"

Take Harb40 Passion competition for example, Great Prizes, But I disqualify my self before I even think about trying to enter, as the "Passion" in his competition is not a "Passion" I am familiar with, as a goodie too-shoes christian My moral standards have difficulty producing a movie about sinful "Passion" it's my shear weakness! if it was a Passion competition driven by good "Passion" Like Hope and accomplishing dreams like the "pursuit of happiness" that's a Passion competition I stand a chance in as I know a thing or two about it, and I am not disqualified before I even enter! and with the Prizes offered it would be well worth my time to try.

also if I had not been busy with school and home work when the" I fight Dragons competition" was going down I would have entered that too as I Kick butt at music videos and it really was a great song to make a Music video for. Oh well!

lets just say that when it comes to music videos I have something to prove "That I am Completely awesome at making Music Videos"

Boxy's Rules, Theme, and Closing Date is what piqued my interest..
I thought that was a really good Comp but it seems I was the only person that thought so.. huh.gif

The Prize was pretty cool too I'll have to say..,
but it was more the 'Can I get this done in time' thing that drove me..
Plus the variation/choice of what your Movie was to be based upon..

Competitions are a good way to create a friendlier Community as well..
People getting involved & commenting instead of just reading threads and moving on silently.

PapaG, it's a good thing the Bible doesn't say anything about being humble.....or you'd never be able to enter any competition.

But, if you look at it from the positive side PapaG, taking the sinful passion and making it a moral telling story, you can make the negative into a positive. Just remember, every year the theme has a different tone.

Keith, no matter what you do, make sure it is something you believe in and can stand behind it and promote it as a worthwhile task.

eh my two cents as well someone who enjoys them "but"

I like competitions but there are always a few things that seem to be common with the ones i have tried lately . I just entered a video in a one lol for educators and it was a frustrating experience and as of yet have no clue if the video is even properly entered

soo here we go..

1) time limit is one on a side note with a very few rare exceptions i never find out about them until the last minute which makes it even worse so time limit and getting the word out is important. The educators one was just a concincidence I had just finished a movie and one of the people who was involved in the contest asked me to enter it

which brings me to problem number 2

2) I have entered in the last 6 months 3 competitions and in each case the actual method of entry into the contest was basically broken or so complicated that it took me a week to actually manage to get the thing entered. eg: I spent a week trying to enter the video into this educators competition lol their system was bugged and when I wrote the tech support I got no reply in the end I got lucky and the system worked basically by accident .. but now the entry sits waiting for review and as of yet no one even answered the mail regarding the entry issue haha.. so that is another huge issue. Manpower, tech support and ease of entry .

3) rules and guidelines are another I find myself sometimes guessing haha. (not good)

I assume that the contests are fair and as of yet have no reason to doubt that they are I think that those running the contests sometimes get busy and/or overwhelmed with issues around it and so in part the contest fails because of that. After my experience with the most recent contest I worry that my work gets wasted which is always a disappointing thing to happen smile.gif
