There's been some discussion about the type of movies that we feature here at Moviestorm, so Alex has put together a very useful little guide. Anyone interested in having their movie featured will find this very useful!

Criteria for choosing featured movies.
Things we like and look for in a Moviestorm movie.

You MUST use Moviestorm, but not necessarily for the whole thing.
Production values, - If we like a movie enough, we will feature it
Cinematography - very good cinematography is key when making something compelling and artistic. Use your knowledge and experience of watching films for inspiration and to know where to point the camera. It’s all about composition. Bad camera shots that move all over the place are disorientating and look unprofessional. It’s easy to do in Moviestorm because of the target shots, follow shots and move-to camera keyframes, you can create what you like. But that doesn’t mean you should for the sake of it. Only what works.
Direction and animation - This involves being as good at using Moviestorm as possible, so it’s not quite as favoured as you might think. It can be very difficult, even impossible to animate your character exactly how you want it, the trick is how you work around that. Also, newer users are less familiar with this so we don’t like to hold a newbie back because of a few animation shortcomings. Moviestorm works the way it works and it’s not perfect. If we see an improvisation conflict we never let it bother our decision on featuring it, because we don’t expect a new user to understand why it’s behaving like that.
Voice acting - There are some really talented Voice actors in this community - and we want to see more! It’s easy to do and it adds so much life to your characters. Even the worst voice acting is leaps and bounds ahead of TTS. It’s one of Moviestorm's best strengths. Record your voice - instant lip syncing! We feel privileged that Moviestorm is a platform for voice actors to practice and show off their talents and we love hearing them.
Set building - Don’t be lazy with your sets, we don’t want to see the terrain bowl! You guys are not the only ones who are sick of Tellytubby land in the background. Set object are by far the most accessible with a huge library of Moviestorm props, and with Sketchup importing being so easy. Use images, backdrops, there are tons of royalty free images out there. Set your scenes with lush sets. Mise en scene people!
Storyline - Obviously. But it’s something we cannot advise on, a good story is a good story. Whether it’s artistic, humorous, horrifying or thought provoking, it keeps you interested. All we ask is to just do it justice with some great production values!

Things we don’t like to feature
Bad encoding - You could make the greatest piece of machinima ever created, but if your encoding is really bad before uploading then it will greatly affect the chances of it being featured. Low bitrates are not much of a problem, that is easily forgivable. But bad aspect ratios, resolutions and framing really do affect it. Also, it’s something that can easily be rectified. If you are using multiple software packages in your tool chain, we suggest you keep the quality high and the resolution the same until the final step, so that you don’t lose it in the process. Then it’s simply a matter of trial and error to find the right codec settings. Find the one that works for you and then use it for all of your future movies. You’re looking for a combination of quality, resolution and cutting data redundancy. Try and balance them. And remember, lowering your resolution is ok as long as you retain the same aspect and pixel ratio, otherwise your asking for trouble.
Text to speech - We always prefer to watch movies if they have real people acting. Even if the recording quality is low, you will gain better knowledge recording your own speech. Using text to speech, even if it’s a premium version just seems to take away the feeling, the soul. Which is important to maintain when you’re creating a synthetic image. If you don’t have a microphone, get one, if you’re making something good then a microphone is worth investing in.
Gratuitous Sex or Violence (must be tasteful) - Pretty obvious really, we have to look out for all of our users and remain tasteful across the board. The same goes for any offensive material. We don’t condemn sex and violence etc. Love it in the right context, if it’s telling a story. It's a matter of judging what’s appropriate.
Mod demos or promos - Even if you made a little movie to show off your mods, the chances are it won’t be featured. Don’t get me wrong, We absolutely love the mods, the demos, show them off till your heart’s content. But the featured movies are something we reserve for the cream, real movies, cinematic art. Something the users will click on, get inspired and say WOW. We will show good trailers, as that is also an art form. If we featured all mods and promos then the featured movies section would be just an extension of the website video database. We like to separate the two, ideally, we would have liked a separate feature list for mods as there’s so much going on in that field.

Things that don’t matter:
Director’s nationality/ experience/ age/ gender – None of these prevent you from creating an outstanding movie, so we don’t even consider them.
Using mods - use as many as you like, as long as it’s Moviestorm you’re animating in, it belongs on our website. As for being featured, mods can only affect it by adding or subtracting to the production values. That is what we are judging. Not if your using our content or not.

I hope this helps some of you to create some really engaging movies, and please remember that we're always interested in seeing something new, so if you choose to feature your Moviestorm movie on another site, please let us know!

Excellent post!

It's really good to have some light shined on a subject. This should help to clear up a lot of questions.
