Yep, the cello is one of my pet project I'd really love to see finished, but it's also proved to be much more involved and complicated than expected :)

As pipe smoker for 20+ years (retired 15 years ago as of this writing), a held pipe is something I've always missed, but the very first thing I need to do is some tests regarding held props "attached" to the puppet's mouth, in order to assess whether it's feasible or not.

And the microwave oven... Heck, even those pesky critters in the Sims enjoy their own animated appliances! I'd like to see more of them in our movies, making life a bit easier to our long-suffering puppets.

Well, as I had suspected, from my previous experiences with held props bound to bones other that those of the hands, it doesn't work as intended.

In spite of being declared as a held prop bound to the MOUTH bone (as shown in the code excerpt below), it seems that Moviestorm binds the prop to the RIGHT_HAND bone whenever a HoldBone other than RIGHT_HAND or LEFT_HAND is selected:

    <entry>
      <string>HoldBone</string>
      <string>MOUTH</string>
    </entry>
...
    <entry>
      <string>Holdable</string>
      <boolean>true</boolean>
    </entry>

Please take a look at this test clip: https://drive.google...Ni1weDJUWVc4N00

Note that the prop doesn't follow the mouth (or the head), but mirrors the movements of the right hand.

BTW, this does not mean the project's going to be shelved, but the implementation won't be as clean as I had in mind: instead of two held props (one of them attached to the puppet's hand and the other to the mouth) which could be switched between them without too much hassle, there will be the held prop attached to the hand and an accessory prop (such as that one included in one of Chris Ollie's mods), ie, the schema used in the cigarrette mod by KV and PapaG (I think).

Besides, I've only found only one reference to this topic (HoldBone other than those of the hands ignored/not working), and, unfortunately my conclusions are confirmed there: http://www.moviestor...showtopic=14951

Some progress with the pipe. So far, both a held and an accessory versions have been created. As a ancillary item to be used in combination with the pipe (or other smoking props), a smoke prop, based on that in the ashtray by Chris Ollie (it will be included in the public release only if I get Chris' permission).

My plans for this thing:

- A lighting the pipe animation, with another ancillary held prop, to be used in combination with the accessory version of the pipe.

Too bad there are some serious issues with poses other than idle, ie, sitting poses, as in those poses, the relation pipe-mouth is lost, so another set of animations is required to be used with them.

Actively working on a held/interactive cordless phone:

Well, I guess it's taking a tad bit more than expected.

At first my idea was using a model from the 3D Warehouse by one Skelchasaurus, just modifying it just the required to make it customizable by the user. But this didn't work: every time I've tried to bring the models to the Modder's Workshop, it complained about a number too large of vertices in a submesh. Tried everything to no avail, so I finally decided to create my own model, based on the design by this guy Skelchawhatever.

So I did, and I got the equivalent of a cheapo clone of the real thing, not as awesomely glistening and cool, but an acceptable copy in the end.

But as designed, the grabbing animation proved to be exceedingly hard to get it right for my limited abilities, and in the end I decided to alter the design and the disposition of the phone terminal. In the process I added a couple details to the phone base:

Attached File  Test---Cordless-phone_Main-Camera_061017-093533.jpg   43.47KB   0 downloads

So long, that's all. At this moment I'm working on the animations. I'll keep you posted.

Well, the held prop approach doesn't work properly.

Tomorrow I'll try the interactive object approach.

It's been a hard day, have had to deal with some issues with the animations of the interactive prop but at last I've managed to make it work and have learned a precious lesson in thr process:

Before starting to work on the animations, be sure each bone in the prop that will be object of any translation transformation have their rotations reset to zero for the three axes in the default pose.

The results so far: a preliminary animation for grabbing the phone terminal and another for putting it again back in the dock. They need to be polished but are working:

I've been struggling over the last two days against some unexplained issue with the position of the puppet in relation to the prop (ie, the cordless phone), I've been unable to fix so far.

Since the original reason to create this addon was that I needed for a scene in a project I'm working on, I've finally decided resume work on a held prop approach; although it's technically not as satisfactory as the interactive prop and some gestures will require some camera tricks -eg, putting the phone terminal back into the base dock-, it's far easier to get it done in a reasonable period of time and very acceptable results.

Once my movie projects currently in production are finished, or shelved -whatever happens first-, I'll eventually resume the work on the interactive cordless phone, although most probably I'll ditch the animation work already done and will start all over again.

A short clip demostrating the animations for the held version of the cordless phone terminal:

https://drive.google...bDNZbUZVaXJuWGs

In short, it includes

- 3 basic poses: hold down, looking at the phone, to ear

- animations for transition between poses

- when looking at phone, animations for accept call, reject call, dialing

- also, animations for faking "put terminal in dock"/"grab terminal from dock", both for to/from hold_down and looking_at positions

I like that. Very cool. Way - way - way down the road, I may like to have a character puffing on a cigar. :) Nice work.

Too bad, as of this date this project has been put aside. Implementing all the features I planned has turned out to be a task way more hard than expected, mainly because of some limitations in the capabilities of held props and some issues with the sitting posture. Also, the way I have managed to get it work, more or less, it's a bit too contorted and not happy with it.

That's not saying I'm going to shelve it, but, like many other modding projects, it has been reclassified as a "low priority" task, and the work on it has been suspended undefinetely.

Anyway, this and the held cello thing -oh, and the bike for ladies!- are among my most cherished projects, so there's a good chance I will ever reassume the work on them.

Understandable and I haven't done modding ... yet. So I can imagine the hard work it must be for some things.But am thankful for all the modders and appreciate their work. :)
