WELCOME TO THE FREE SOFTWARE LIST!
I've seen topics upon topics of free software, textures, models, etc. That everybody has tried here in MS. I'm sure that pretty soon if you don't bookmark the link it becomes pretty difficult to find that program you like but was too busy (or lazy) at the moment to bookmark or download. So I would like with the collaboration of everybody to make a list of all the FREE SOFTWARE AND SITES that you guys think that are useful for making machinima. It can be audio it can be video compositing, model making, textures, whatever! But remember it has to be 100% FREE. So if you find something you think everybody here can use please post below and I would be delighted to post it up here on the first post!

Please note as the list gets bigger it will be modified so remember what you see today doesn't mean it will be there tomorrow!

The links have been colored according to their classification so they can be easily identified!

If there is a program/site that has two or more classifications it will be posted under the Utilities section.

Programs are not guaranteed to work on your operating system although most of them should.

If it's not too much trouble. Please don't forget to vote in the poll above!

4. Organica 3D

This program takes the metaball concept, and applies it to blocks of different shapes. Its great for organic and natural shapes. I use it for caves and stone arches. No texturing here, so texture it elsewhere. It can save a mesh as 3ds, whick you can import into Sketchup or other.

5. Albatross

This is a nice modeler that does subdivision surfaces. Very much like Silo, but free. It has a lot of interesting modeling tools, and does texturing and animation (with bones) as well. This is what I apply textures in because Sketchup is not the greatest for that.

6. T2

This is the terrain modeler I usually use. It uses a grayscale image for a heightmap, but then applies textures based on things like elevation and angle. Can have as many different textures as you want. The texture and mesh can be exported at any resolution. Saves 3ds for Sketchup import. Hint. Always use the smooth command in Sketchup, and then omit back faces when you import into MW.

5. Ffmpegx

Transcoding on a Mac is a serious pain, especially since MS only supports very limited codecs and only the AVI container format. As of this post (Feb 22, 2010.), the only video format that MS is supposed to handle for adding video to prims is MP42 in an AVI container. This is what it generates when it renders it's own video.

There seems to be a bug in handling this on Mac platforms though because adding video to a prim doesn't always work. Download this tool to fix it. Instructions below:

The download instructions ask you to download mpeg2enc.intel and a tar file containing mplayer and mencoder. They fail to tell you to unzip the archive and select the unarchived binaries during the installation phase, so the steps are:

1) Download ffmgepX (IMG file) and mount it, drag it to the Applications folder.

2) Download the mpeg2enc.intel file.

3) Download the gzipped tarfile of mplayer and mencoder and unarchive it.

4) Run ffmpegX from the Applications folder and when it asks for the installation location of these files, use the finder browser to locate each file separately, even though it says to locate the tar file for both mencoder and mplayer.

6. Sothink Free Video Converter

Sothink Video Converter is 100% free video converter software for converting rich formats of video audio files, with high definition and top speed. Some great resources there thanks david, detonationfilms.com have very good and useful stock videos and pictures which I`ll certainly find good use of, and those that are not free are not to badly priced and look good quality too. I`m downloading Vue 7 now, gonna check it out and may consider purchasing it cool.gif

For those who want to mess with chroma key, here's a free AVI editor that has that feature. I've used it for awhile before finally getting Vegas. Oh, and this movie poster maker is way cool and easy to use:

Thanks to this wonderful list I have found a program that could convert my movie ( Any Video Converter ) and now I have uploaded it YAY!.
The only thing I have found with the free version is it overlays some text at the start of the movie and I could not find an option that would turn it off, but I found out how to.
Go to the folder the program is installed to and open profiles_v2 in notepad then look for
<codec name="Video Codec" visible="1"> and change the 1 to a 0 (zero) and the problem is solved.

I like to add another good free software called Super.

Super is a freeware audio/video converter which can convert to many different formats. Super is located at http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Also, thanks for creating this thread. I never knew about most of these programs above except Google Sketchup, Blender & Audacity. I download a few progs like Acid Express & Gimphoto.

This is turning into a really great list of resources.

Can I recommend that you also take a look at OpenDisc? It's a freely-downloadable CD packed to the gills with free and open-source software for Windows users. It's regularly updated, and contains a really impressive range of applications. Of course, each of the apps can be downloaded separately as well.

You might also want to include Celtx, which is a script-formatting and project management tool. Although they offer a subscription service to access additional features, the core product is free (and partially open-source).
