I'm using a Geforce 7800 and was wondering - aside from turning off the shadows if there are any fixes for the shadows that seem to jump around.
I'm noticing it on actor's faces. The shadows look good but then they jump around a bit and are annoying. I noticed it on a few other user's movie so I assume it's a known issue but I was wondering if anyone has a fix or if there is better results with a different video card. Thanks for any help... |

I'm finding this an issue also. It's possible to minimise the problem by tweaking the directional light, but I think this is really a problem for the developers to look into.

For all the Moviestorm films I have seen almost every object and prop cast shadows when shadows is on. Even the necks of the actors are shadowed by their heads. Comparing to my former machinima tool (The Sims 2) this shadow system is pretty complex.
This complexity has some drawbacks. Not all graphics cards are blessed to have this feature, no. Some may not have shadows on MS (like me  ) or they could have jumpy and glitchy shadows (like you). I recommend playing with the directional lights, it usually fixes the problem. Also try to wait for another patch, but since SF is gonna take a holiday vacation, you could expect the next patch by January (that's too long  ) The latest 1.0.2 patch with the new graphics card compatibility codes didn't work for me. Maybe it didn't work for you too. Oh, try another fix: Turn on both the sahdow options in the Options in the Main Menu and the Lighting adjustments in the Set Builder. The shadow option in the Set Builder requires the global setting (the one in the Options) to be on in order for shadows to be completely "on" in that scene or set. -------------------- [witty signature pending]

Oddly, this is partly hardware dependent and partly down to the complexity of the scenes and models. It bugs the heck out of me, personally, but there are serious performance issues with almost every solution we have trialled - the best thing we can think of right now is some finer level of control over shadows especially on faces, hair, heads and upper bodies - after all, most Directors of Lighting spend days working on solutions to REMOVE shadows from faces in most situations and just leave subtle shading and tonal effects on the skin from the lights.
ANY Directors of Lighting or DOP's out there who can help us refine the face lighting and head lighting tools early next year? -------------------- David J W Bailey ACA MA MSc GIBiol MInstD
