Lesson ideas - mathematics

We're putting together various ideas for how teachers can use Moviestorm in the classroom. We'd love your feedback on these - which ones work, which don't, how could they be improved, and so on. If you've actually tried any of these, let us know how it went.

And of course, please contribute any of your own!


Basic numbers
(Teacher-created video) Create simple videos that demonstrate numbers and simple mathematical operations, for example two cars plus three cars equals five cars. Use both objects and numerals, in the style of Sesame Street, to help children build confidence with written numbers and the concept of number.
Benefits: younger children in particular react well to videos.

Visualizations
Find a creative way to explain a mathematical problem or concept. For example, you can explain Venn diagrams using groups of people standing on rugs: this rug has all the members of the Smith family, that rug has all the women, and a third rug has all the old people. The student can then demonstrate visually how some people may fit into one, many or new groups, and how they overlap.
Benefits: it helps students to develop a clear understanding of the concept and show that they have mastered it.

Statistics
Create a video demonstrating the understanding of statistics. The student could, for example, commentate on sports footage, explaining what the different statistics actually mean. They could demonstrate concepts such as dependent factors; take a statistic such as x% of people in such a demographic exhibit such a trait, and then show how that can be an effect of environmental factors rather than the perceived demographic (e.g. x% of Latinos go to college, but the underlying factor is that y% of people in these socio-economic groups go to college, and z% of Latinos are in that group). Or demonstrate statistics like X doubles your risk of getting cancer, but that actually means your risk is increased from x% to 2x%, which may still be very low.
Benefits: visualizing problems is a good way to help students understand them. It also demonstrates the applicability of statistics to the real world.

Biography
Create a biography of a famous mathematician and explain the key elements of his work. Intersperse presentation with slides and music to create a documentary. If appropriate, enhance it with reconstructed scenes from the era or the person’s life.
Benefits: adding multimedia content increases the depth of understanding and research, and enables the student to approach the subject in a richer way than just using written text and still images. Providing narration builds confidence in speaking without needing to do it in front of an audience or camera. Creating reconstructed scenes is fun and engaging, requires further research, and encourages an imaginative approach to the subject.

I think have a basic numbers movie is a great idea. In the fun land pack there is a set of letters and numbers that can be customized to different colours and numbers by clicking. They are even animatable so If i created a movie with an example sum on the board then all a teacher/student would have to do is change variant to get to the answers. Have a look at the attachment. This could make a great template for primary school teachers. If anyone can elaborate on this as to what scenario would be the most helpful to them then it would be greatly appreciated. It could accompany a song as a visualisation or just a simple way of learning times tables.
There are also letters as well as numbers so the same technique can be applied to English and spelling.
