Avidemux is multiplatform, but again, virtualdub is a more capable product so you are better off with that if your platform is supported.
Great list!

Patchmaker is a motion tracking tool, you can use it to track either a static image or a video file on any surface. You decide the starting parameters. The image, or video, is locked to the surface and moves with it, so no need for keyframing.
Here is a test file I made in a few minutes using the hidewire demo file where I gave the girl a tattoo. The first part is the raw footage with the wires and all, the second part is with the wires hidden and the tattoo added. Not very good I know, but I really did not try too hard to make it good, just wanted to see what it could do.

This looks like it could be really useful. I wonder if I can track a whirling propeller onto my airship with this? Best go and try.
Thanks BA!

There seems to be a bug in handling this on Mac platforms though because adding video to a prim doesn't always work, even when using video rendered by MS itself. Some of the time it doesn't even play, and many times it crashes before you get to the cutting room.
In any case, a great tool I found in trying to debug this problem is ffmpegX, for MacOS X:
http://www.ffmpegx.com/
The download instructions ask you to download mpeg2enc.intel and a tar file containing mplayer and mencoder. They fail to tell you to unzip the archive and select the unarchived binaries during the installation phase, so the steps are:
1) Download ffmgepX (IMG file) and mount it, drag it to the Applications folder.
2) Download the mpeg2enc.intel file
3) Download the gzipped tarfile of mplayer and mencoder and unarchive it
4) run ffmpegX from the Applications folder and when it asks for the installation location of these files, use the finder browser to locate each file separately, even though it says to locate the tar file for both mencoder and mplayer.
Once the install completes, play around with settings and transcode 'til your heart's content!

It comes from the UK, but it is available in North America (I buy in at Chapters here in Canada).
It comes with a DVD full of software each month. Most of it is freeware, though they also regularly include full versions of commercial software (typically an earlier version than the current one).
There are many categories of software on the disc, including those for graphics, and for audio/video.
For the price of the magazine, I find it good value when I find a useful utility. Most of them could be downloaded, but having them on the disc saves the time you'd spend finding and downloading them.
Maybe MovieStorm should approach the magazine about getting on the Coverdisc -- great way to increase the user base.
