I noticed some discussion in another thread here that readers find it annoying when posters quote the whole of a previous post.

This has been a problem from day one, and I must admit I find it an irritating and discourteous habit, made more so by being unable to understand why people do it esecially when repeatedly asked not to.

It is good manners to consider the readability of a whole thread when posting, not just thinking about drawing attention to your individual post.

I am always understanding of new forum members who sometimes take a while to find out how everything works, so please don't think this is aimed at you if that is the case.

This is a topic which has been raised many times, and I think it is extreme bad manners to ignore this piece of common forum etiquette. I think this unthinking lazy minded posting has been tolerated long enough.

I searched around and found this interesting discussion on another forum, to illustrate that this is an issue which is universal, and not something particular to this forum.

Mike has been kind enough to send the following instructions if you are unsure how to proceed.

Simple instructions on how to use quotes.

These are quote tags.

[ quote ]
[ /quote ]

Any new text goes here - underneath [ /quote ]

***********************

You should always delete text that isn't relevant from the quote.

This is the quote before text is deleted.

[ quote ]
This is the text I am interested in.
This is the text I want to delete.
[ /quote ]

************************
Select the text you want to delete and press the Delete key.

This is the quote after text is deleted.

[ quote ]
This is the text I am interested in.
[ /quote ]

Make sure you have quote tags at the beginning and at the end of the text you want to quote.

And that's all you need to know.

Armanus Tutorial - How to reply without quotes

If you don't want any quotes in your posts, scroll down to the bottom and use the add reply button (right next to the new topic button).

If you use the quote or reply buttons in a particular post it will always quote that post, you can always highlight it all and hit backspace.

Just in case you didn't know, each individual post has the quote and reply buttons. The reply button opens up the text box for you to respond..in effect you are replying specifically to that particular post, which is why it quotes the post.
The quote button is actually a multi-quote button. You would push this if there was more then one individual post you wanted to quote and reply to. You push the button for each post then scroll down to the bottom under the last post of the page and click add reply and all the quoted posts are there.

Hitting that add reply on the bottom produces no quotes, which is perfect if you want to add to the conversation without quoting anything in particular.

@Mike, I know what you are saying, but I think there are cases where people are capable of editing their posts, writing in proper sentences, and generally thinking before speaking and do not make the time and effort to do so despite being asked repeatedly to do so over a period of years.

@Keith thank you, I really appreciate it. smile.gif
