Hi,

I'm trying to use the trial of moviestorm and have run into a few problems / questions and wondered if someone had some advice. I'm using a 15" macbook pro retina, 2.3ghz i7, 16gb ram, OS 10.7.4, java installed, etc. I have two accounts for security - one that is an admin account, and the other my main account that I primarily use.

INSTALLATION / USE ISSUE:
In the past, I've been able to install software on the main account side, simply by entering in my admin username and password. Following the install instructions, I installed the NVIDIA toolkit, followed by dragging the moviestorm app to the applications folder and found that the moviestorm icon in the app folder was just a folder with a red "no go" slash if that make sense. I moved over to the admin side, installed everything the same exact way, and the moviestorm app appeared / opened correctly. However, when I go back to the main account side, the moviestorm app is back to the folder with a red dash. This is the only application I've run into that problem with and not sure how to troubleshoot it. Using Moviestorm on the admin side isn't really an option. Any suggestions on how to get Moviestorm to work on both admin and main accounts?

LONG TERM USE QUESTION:
In the knowledge base it says that the application needs to check online every two weeks -- maybe I missed it but is that for the subscription model only, or does that apply whether I subscribe annually or outright purchase the software? If the latter, are there plans in place to disable the internet check in the off chance that the company is no longer in operation in the future?

Very interesting software and I look forward to giving it a try. Thanks in advance if you can help answer one or both questions.

Long term use:
It was only the subscription versions that did that two-week logout; the permanent versions do not do that, and will remain logged in indefinitely.

Installation/non admin
I'm not quite sure what would be happening here, but it may well be a permissions issue.
If you log in as admin, open the applications contents folder using right click, show application contents, right click on contents and select get info, then click the padlock on the bottom right corner so that you can change the file permissions.
You can then change it to 'Read and Write' for either the user group that your non-admin account is in, or for everyone, then click the cog wheel and select 'apply to enclosed items...' (locked if you have not clicked the padlock).

Let us know if that gets things working.

Thanks for the answer on long term use and the tech help.

I did change the permissions as you wrote, and the icon on the non-admin side turned to the proper moviestorm icon (as opposed to the folder with a red dash). Unfortunately, the app doesn't launch -- only continues to bounce in the dock.

The app works ok on the admin side so will use that to evaluate, however, if there are any other ideas on getting it to work in the non-admin side I much appreciate it.

Thanks

Which installer did you use?
People have had problems previously with the install due to not dragging the application from the installer dmg into their applications folder; it does not run correctly when still packaged up in the dmg.

Are you using a recent version of the mac operating system? - as I understand it, Java is a separate download for some of the newer versions. It might be worth checking that the non-admin user has access to Java, as Moviestorm requires that to run. (Type 'java -version' on the console; it should say the java version; if it gives an error, that could indicate that there is a problem there).

We have duplicated this problem internally; hopefully once we have a solution we can let you know about it (and hopefully update our installer on our website).
I believe that the Moviestorm Education installer does not have this problem - you could try that instead, possibly.

It appears that there is a missing set of permissions (group) for the install.
It can be corrected by:
Log in as the user that installed Moviestorm
Bring up the terminal
type: cd /Applications/
type: chmod -Rf a+rx Moviestorm.app

This should add permissions to read/execute (rx) for all users (a). If you wanted your users to be able to use the modders workshop/install addons or update Moviestorm, then it would need to be
type: chmod -Rf a+rwx Moviestorm.app
instead, to add read, write and execute permissions.

It worked! Thank you for troubleshooting this.
