Here is an interesting question just for fun. I remembered something a few days ago and decided to ask if anyone else remembers this.

Ok, here is the trivia question: Who did the very first machinima series ever and where was it seen?

Surely I'm not the only one that remembers this. Unless I am the oldest one here. smile.gif

How old are you Steelblade?

I'm pretty sure that's going to be an issue that someone somewhere will dispute, whatever answer is given, depending on your definition of machinima.

That would have to be, "The Diary of a Camper", recorded in 1996 in Quake. Here is a link to an article that mentions it in the first paragraph. It's an article about machinima. Moviestorm isn't mentioned because the article was made in 2004.

But I still agree it was The Rangers' with their Ranger Gone Bad series...

to the best of my knowledge.. that was the first "series" waaaay back in tail-end of 1996!

I love it "waaaay back in the tail-end of 1996". LOL. Boy do you make me feel old. Like my kids who don't know who the Beatles were. They do know who Elvis is though.

But now I am wondering if it is any of the SIMS movies - like Strangerhood.

No, no, no, and no a few more times. smile.gif

Definition of machinima? All video supplied by computer game, outside audio.

I am 43 now. All the answers are in the wrong decade. For a hint, it was part of a regular late night comedy tv series. Some regular non-machinima skits included people in bee costumes.

A clue a day till either someone gets it, or friday. smile.gif

That sounds like a Saturday night live skit.

I am 43. But not American. This probably disqualifies me, even though my first thought was of "Max Headroom" in the late 1980s. But some distant brain cell is saying "it was not rendered human characters"? I was thinking of Nolan Bushnell's video game "Computer Space" as I know that it appears in the movie Soylent Green (1973), but that has no "bee costumes" and was not a series. On the other hand, "Where the Wild Things Are" did use digital compositing used to combine CG backgrounds and traditional animation and had "bee costumes" (or at least weird costumes!)

mmmm

must drink more brain elixir and think harder

Anyway, if nothing else, you made me really think hard about how things get started and I popped back to read these:

1 - "Digital Filmmaking: The Changing Art and Craft of Making Motion Pictures" By Thomas A. Ohanian, Michael E. Phillips?

2 - How Video Games began: http://www.ralphbaer.com/how_video_games.htm

3 - http://accad.osu.edu/~waynec/history/timeline.html for how we had the earliest "graphics" in 1967 (wow! BASIC was born the same year I was)

4 - The first reference to "Computer Generated Movies" was Catmull, Edwin. A System for Computer Generated Movies. Proceedings of the ACM National Conference August 1972

Still no answer, but it left me a with a real sensation that the whole digital film -> machinima transition has occurred in a heartbeat.

What next, eh?

Saturday night live was the correct answer. A free cookie is the prize to be given some time before the year 3000. smile.gif

In 1975 Saturday night live premiered. In episode 4 they showed the first of 5 skits involving the game Pong.

Yes. Pong was used for the first machinima. The graphical side of the skits were just a little bit limited of course, but nonetheless all the video was supplied by the game.

It would be a while before anyone tried again, game graphics being what they were. smile.gif

SNL just hasn't been all that funny in decades, I'm afraid. There are some skits that hit the mark, but nothing like the good ol days of Pong and Mr Bill. smile.gif

And landsharks.
