Build Number: 12315

Release Version: Moviestorm Release 1.1

New features

  • Many character heads now have morphing options. Select the head you want and you'll see a set of sliders below it. Choose the feature you want (big nose, square jaw, etc) and then drag the slider to choose how much of it you want. This should give you much greater variation in characters.

  • We've revamped the way moods work. The Improviser is back but you now have complete control over it, including the ability to turn an improvisation into a gesture that you can keep and edit. Characters now also have a mood-based pose that they will use whenever they're not doing anything else as an alternative to the default pose. Changing poses and facial expressions should now blend smoothly from one to another.
If you don't want any improvisations at all, you can turn it off for your entire movie in the Script Editor > Outline > Settings.

  • We've rethemed the user interface. The new look is a slate grey, so goodbye to the old blue. All the buttons have been redone and are much clearer. Navigation between the different Views is much clearer using the buttons at the top of the screen.

  • Moviestorm's Camerawork View has been completely reworked. Setting up camera keyframes is now much easier as Moviestorm provides a list of viewpoints to jump straight to. Moviestorm generates several of these for each of your characters in scene and bookmarks each new keyframe that you introduce, so you can get back to that framing easily. This can make setting up complex moves much faster.

  • The way cameras move has been greatly improved. Cameras now follow curved spline paths and ease in and out at the start and end of the moves to provide a much smoother view. Cameras should now properly follow targets without the jerking about that they used to do. You can also use roll (or dutch tilt) in free shots (but not yet Targeted shots or One shots) - look for the little orange triangles in the framing view.

  • We've dropped the ability to edit a scene on-set, since it overlapped badly with the Cutting Room functionality. However, for television style linear editing we've introduced the ability to have jump cuts as well as moves on a single camera (you can think of them as teleports if you want). You can still use multiple cameras, but you may find the need for so many cameras has been greatly reduced. For more filmic non-linear editing use the Cutting Room or an external editor of your choice. You can also see all the clips that you use in the Cutting Room on the timeline when on-set and you can also edit them on-set (moving them in time or revealing) which should make it easier to adjust an edit when the scene changes without having to redo everything.

Resolved issues

  • The Cutting Room View has been significantly redesigned in order to improve its functionality. Users now have the ability to have credits as overlays with the ability to fade in and fade out.

  • Finding animations using the Gesturiser should be significantly easier as the animations are now labelled coherently rather than being driven from the file name.

  • Sound is being implemented; we have added a variety of foley sounds to props and animations. This should hopefully drive up the ambience of your movie

  • Numerous bug fixes to help improve both the stability and general performance of the application.

  • Save As for your movies is back. Just select the yellow triangle next to the save button. Likewise other buttons in the director's view have had quick link functionality attached to them.

Known issues

  • The directional lighting on lights, walls and objects on walls can give odd shadows

  • Animated textures don't start animating the first time the texture is loaded

  • Point at commands when holding a prop attempt to point at the held prop

  • Tintable costumes return to default colour when one brings up the tinting menu.

  • Placing props using alt takes into account the shadow meaning the placement is slightly off.

  • Positional sound is no longer functioning.

  • Old movies will still use the old camera moves for compatibility. You can convert the old moves to the new by going to the Script Editor > Overview > Settings and hitting the Convert button.

  • Characters feet slide slightly when performing a turn at the end of a walk.

  • You will also notice some changes to your existing movies when using the new cutting room, as it will automatically close all the gaps between scenes.

  • Not all head/hair/beard combinations work well.

  • On Ati cards characters with tintable costumes can pick up the colour from other costumes.

  • Camera framing problems under stress testing - we recommend saving frequently when using the camera system extensively.

  • Props that appear in multiple add on packs are appearing multiple times in the held prop menu.

New features

  • Lighting - Clicking on a lamp in the Directors View now provides a Flicker action.

  • Cameras - All cameras now appear on the camera list in the Directors View

Resolved issues

  • Audio - Choosing Redo dialogue from the Timeline no longer reduce the volume of the dialogue in question.

  • Lighting - Lights which have been turned off no longer sometimes illuminate other things in the scene.

  • Audio - The dialogue volume in the Cutting Room now correctly affects the final rendered movie.

  • Modder's workshop - The Browse button should work correctly again.

  • Compatibility - Movies made in version 1.0.4 which contain mutual animations (such as kisses or handshakes) should now load correctly in 1.1.1 (provided they were not saved in 1.1.0).

  • Cameras - Selecting a camera view by clicking on the camera thumbnail, or by right clicking on the camera in the 3d view, now correctly switches to the camera view for that camera, rather than for the previously active camera.

Known issues

  • Compatibility - Movies made in 1.0.4 with mutuals, and then saved in 1.1, still do not load correctly. Please send us a copy of the movie.mscope file for any such movies that you want to fix, and we will hopefully be able to manually fix them.

Release Version: Moviestorm version 1.1.2

New features

  • Trees now have a simple swaying motion to give them a little life. A future Moviestorm release will provide controls for the strength of the wind and the amount of sway.

  • The set object Customisation Panel now opens in a seperate (moveable) dialogue box.

  • Character walk paths can now be edited in the Director's View. Just scrub the timeline along to any point during the character's walk, shift-click and drag . The character will adapt her walk automatically to include the new point. In this way you can now easily ensure that your characters avoid each other or objects on set.

  • Support for a new, component-based system for set object customisation. At present, only a few set objects (Tinsel, gifts and the Menorah, all from the Happy Holidays content pack) support components. More component-based set objects will be added in later Content Packs.

  • Shift-clicking a character on set in the Director's View and dragging them to another point on set will now create a walk for that character, exactly as if you had issued a Move here command. (Note that this is not the same as dragging a character's mark).

  • Groups of set objects can now be moved and rotated as one object. Shift-click an object in the Set Workshop View to add it to the selection group. The group can now be moved or rotated in just the same way as a single set object. We'll be expanding on the multiple-selection features in future releases.

  • Apart from characters, Moviestorm now features moveable objects. Place the object on set in the set workshop, then go to the Directors View and use the same shift-drag mechanism as characters to create their movement path. The objects that are currently moveable are Bat, Bat_Flying, Ghost, Skulls, WitchesBroom, Snowmen, Skull, TV_Camera, Follow_Spot, Retro_Saucer, Shuttle and Vehicles.

  • Moviestormers with access to the Modder's Workshop (which is still in an invite-only Beta stage) can now import objects in Google SketchUp format (.skp).

  • Vehicles additionally follow some basic kinetic rules. The wheels rotate and turn and the car body will bank when turning. This is only the first step though - vehicles have a lot more functionality to come.

Resolved issues

  • Changing material colours for set objects is now achieved by clicking the set object in Set Workshop View, and choosing _Change Colour_ from the (new) ring menu that appears. Certain set objects will also provide several texture variaitons, which can be accessed in the same way.

  • Customisable textures on set objects will now highlight on mouse-over.

  • Characters holding gun props can now aim at a target. Simply click your chosen target, and from the ring menu that appears choose _Aim at_ (instead of the usual _Point at_). Characters will automatically track their target if the target moves, and will cease aiming when appropriate (when putting their gun away, for instance).

Known issues

  • Targeted camera shots can produce inconsistent results when targeted at characters.

  • The undo/redo functionality does not work when applied to vehicle movement commands.

  • All Modder's Workshop users must download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86). This library is used for the new SketchUp importer. The Modder's Workshop will no longer function without this library installed.

  • The Modder's Workshop does not currently save any changes made to morphable heads.

  • The SketchUp importer is not compatible with the new SketchUp 7 format. Use Save As from within SketchUp and choose SketchUp Version 6 as the output format.

  • When this update has finished, you may need to re-run the launcher before Moviestorm will start.

  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will crash every second time.

  • Walk paths through doors are not adjustable into curves. The explode walk function which should enable this is inconsistent in how well it works

  • Mac users running MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard) may experience slow running of Moviestorm, caused by the graphics card overheating.

If you encounter problems with trying to put in a Handcuff animation, try stopping the prisoner from improvising (using change mood, or by turning off improvisation for the whole scene via the script editor > settings tab).

  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will crash every second time.

  • Mac users running MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard) may experience slow running of Moviestorm, caused by the graphics card overheating.

Resolved issues

  • When passing through doorways, characters can now use different gaits other than the default.

  • Characters should open doors correctly rather than walking to the wrong side of the door prior to opening it.

If you encounter problems with trying to put in a Handcuff animation, try stopping the prisoner from improvising (using change mood, or by turning off improvisation for the whole scene via the script editor > settings tab).

  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will crash every second time it is run.

  • Modders Workshop - A template, part or bodypart saved with a new name will sometimes not appear in the browser tree. The 'Refresh Browser' button should make the new file appear.

  • Mac users running MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard) may experience slow running of Moviestorm, caused by the graphics card overheating.

  • Modders Workshop - The Modder's Workshop will need to be restarted every time a set object is imported using the Sketchup Importer. The 'Refresh browser' button will cause the files to show up in the tree, but the model will not load.

  • Targeted camera shots can produce inconsistent results when targeted at characters.

  • The undo/redo functionality does not work when applied to vehicle movement commands.

  • Major improvements to the Modders Workshop, principally in user interface and navigation.

  • PC only: Playing video on set objects no longer uses FFMpeg; it now uses Directshow. This significantly improves video-playing on set objects.

  • Support for the upcoming Criminals pack, allowing multiple sounds on held prop animations.

Resolved issues

  • Female walk updated to be more feminine.

  • The animation for a character's head will no longer 'pop' at the end of a walk if the character walks while looking at something.

  • Walking though doors will now work correctly when the character is using a Gait or a Blended Gait.

  • The animation for a character's head will no longer 'pop' if the character is looking at something while sat down.

  • Fix for crash problem on Mac's with ATI graphics when loading user textures.

  • Changing a character's sex will no longer break held prop animations on that character.

  • Character improvisation has been given some care and attention, and has been readdressed to no longer cause as many animation blending issues.

  • Fix for a crash that was happening as rendering was finishing.

  • Blink time, Saccades, Breathing rate and Breathing depth sliders were not consistent. Moving any of these sliders to the left now reduces the effect.

Known issues

  • Targeted camera shots can produce inconsistent results when targeted at characters.

  • The undo/redo functionality does not work with character or vehicle movement commands, when one changes the curve being followed by the character or vehicle.

  • Crash problem on some systems when trying to use Depth of Field. (Particularly Macs with Nvidia graphics.)

  • Gestures or Improvisations can stop the Handcuffing activities from starting. If you encounter problems with trying to put in a Handcuff animation, try stopping the prisoner from improvising (using change mood, or by turning off improvisation for the whole scene via the script editor > settings tab).

  • Modders Workshop: The reset button will need to be pressed every time a set object is imported using the Sketchup Importer. This allows the newly imported prop to be selected in the asset tree, and the template selected and saved to create the thumbnail which will otherwise be missing.

  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will sometimes crash while being started.

  • Playing multiple copies of the same sound at the same time on the timeline will result in the sound not stopping correctly. This is particlarly manifested with the Police Car sirens.

  • Moviestorm sometimes runs out of memory during long sessions. We recommend saving your work often, and if you are loading a new movie, it is preferable to exit and restart Moviestorm rather than returning to the main menu screen before loading.

  • Changing face expression sliders in the Advanced Mood Customiser now provides direct visual feedback if the timeline marker is after the Mood Change activity.

  • Modders workshop now has a Close button.

  • The sound system now works better, allowing multiple occurrences of the same sound playing at the same time. This was previously causing significant problems with Police Cars.

  • Tinting objects or changing images on objects should now only affect the object being edited.

  • Looping 3D Sound on mobile objects (such as Police Cars) now works when playing from part-way through the motion.

Known issues

  • The undo/redo functionality does not work with character or vehicle movement commands, when one changes the curve being followed by the character or vehicle.

  • Gestures or Improvisations can stop the Handcuffing activities from starting. If you encounter problems with trying to put in a Handcuff animation, try stopping the prisoner from improvising (using change mood, or by turning off improvisation for the whole scene via the script editor > settings tab).

  • No more support for pre-1.1 walk activities. Movies created prior to Moviestorm version 1.1 will not work with 1.1.6. Prior to updating you might be able to convert the Movie to use the updated walk system by going to the setting tab of the Script Editor, and selecting the 'Convert to new walks' button.

  • Reordering dutch tilt camera keyframes causes problems.

  • Moviestorm still has memory issues, although they should no longer be triggered by using the tag cloud. See forums for details as to how to increase the memory available to Moviestorm, if you have a computer above minimum spec.

  • Movies rendered directly from Moviestorm will play back without sound if played through Quicktime on a Mac.

  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will sometimes crash while being started.

Known issues

  • nVidia graphics adapters using the 190.38 revision drivers may experience distorted characters, non-rendering special effects (flame and particle effects), background terrain displayed as black and other display driver related issues. A partial solution to these problems is to uncheck the "Use Hardware Skinning" option in Moviestorm Settings under the "Graphics" tab, but this may reduce frame rate. We suggest rolling back to an earlier (or later) driver to completely resolve the issues.

  • PC: Custom Codec tab may cause Moviestorm to crash to desktop whilst accessing certain codecs. Please be sure to save regularly if you intend to output with a system codec.
