Vista Users please read.

We strongly recommend that existing Moviestorm users running Vista should reinstall Moviestorm rather than using the automatic patcher.

The Moviestorm installer provides Windows Vista user with two methods of running Moviestorm. Shortcuts to these two methods will appear in your Start Menu under the Moviestorm General Release folder, as Moviestorm and Moviestorm for non-admin users. We recommend that you run Moviestorm in Admin mode, by choosing the standard Moviestorm shortcut. When you click this shortcut, Vista's User Account Control system will ask you to confirm your actions. At the prompt An unidentified program wants access to your computer, choose Allow: I trust this program. I know where it's from or what it's for.. Moviestorm will now start (in Vista Admin mode).

If you want to run Moviestorm from a non-admin account, or without allowing elevated Admin privileges, then use the shortcut called Moviestorm for non-admin users. If you attempt to install updates or new content whilst in non-admin mode, Moviestorm will attempt to restart in Admin mode.

Compatibility issues

Movies from version 1.0.4 will be using characters who use our older head and hair models. Existing users will have a licence for the "CompatibilityEA" content pack, which allows existing movies to continue to use the older head and hair models. It can be downloaded from the Content packs button in the Launcher, in the same way as other content packs.

Known issue: Mutual animations in saved movies from 1.0.4 do not play in 1.1. You may, however, load the movie, delete the mutual animation, and add it again.

Whats New

There are many new features and product improvements in the 1.1 release. Here are a few highlights:

  1. Many character heads now have morphing options. Select the head you want and you'll see a set of sliders below it. Choose the feature you want to emphasise (big nose, square jaw, etc) and then drag the slider to choose the magnitude of the effect. This will allow you much greater variation between your characters.
  2. The character Moods system has changed significantly. The Improviser which featured in early versions of Moviestorm makes a welcome return, but Moviestorm now allows you complete control over your characters' improvisations, including the ability to turn an improvisation into a Gesture Sequence which you can then edit. Characters' default poses will now differ depending on their current mode. Changes in poses and facial expressions will now transition smoothly.
  3. If you don't want your characters to improvise at all, you can turn Improvisation off for your entire movie in the Script Editor > Outline > Settings.
  4. We've re-themed the user interface. The new look is a slate grey, so goodbye to the old blue. All the buttons have been redesigned to be cleaner and clearer. Navigation between the different Views is much clearer using the buttons at the top of the Moviestorm screen.
  5. Moviestorm's Camerawork View has been completely reworked. Moviestorm will now automatically generate several default camera viewpoints for your movie. Any extra viewpoint which you create will be added to this list automatically. You can return to a previous viewpoint at any time simply by clicking its thumbnail in the Viewpoints list.
  6. Camera movement has been greatly improved. Cameras now follow curved "spline" paths and ease in and out at the start and end of moves. Cameras can now use Dutch Tilt (camera roll) in Free shots (but not yet Targeted shots or One shots) - look for the orange triangles on each side of the Free Shot framing view.
  7. Your camera-shot sequence can no longer be directly edited from the timeline in the Director's View. However, for television-style linear editing we've introduced the ability to add jump cuts as well as moves to a single camera (you can think of them as teleports if you like). You can still use multiple cameras, but you may find the need for so many cameras has been greatly reduced. For more filmic non-linear editing, use the Cutting Room View or an external editor of your choice. You can also see all of your clips on the Director's View timeline as you've assembled them in the Cutting Room View. These clip sequences can be adjusted whilst in Director's View.

Changes in this release

  1. The Cutting Room View has been significantly redesigned in order to improve its functionality. Users now have the ability to overlay credits and titles, with the ability to fade in and fade out.
  2. Locating specific gestures using the Gesturiser is now much easier. Gestures now have more intuitive names (previously gesture names were dictated by the gesture filename within Moviestorm's data files).
  3. A variety of sounds and Foley audio has been added to props, set objects and gestures. These will be automatically triggered.
  4. Numerous bug fixes to help improve both the stability and general performance of the application.
  5. Moviestorm once again features a Save As command, accessibly from the drop-down menu next to the Save button. Several other buttons have additional (advanced user) functionality attached in the form of drop-down menus.

Introduction

Moviestorm is now in a General Release phase, but improvements and new content are still being added. When a new release is available, Moviestorm will automatically prompt you to download a free upgrade. You’ll also regularly receive free updates for all of your Moviestorm Content Packs in the same way.

If you’re new to Moviestorm, you’ll probably want to start with the Quick Start Movie. Just run Moviestorm and choose New Movie from the main menu. Moviestorm will ask if you’d like to run the Quick Start Movie, which contains easy-to-follow instructions to guide you through your first Moviestorm movie.

If you need help with Moviestorm, you can run the Quick Start Movie again, or access Moviestorm’s internal Help system by clicking the ? button.

If you have a query that isn’t covered in the tutorials, you can make a post in the official forums. Members of the Moviestorm development team, as well as expert Moviestormers from within the community, monitor the forums regularly, and are happy to help.

You’ll need to register as a Moviestormer before you can post in the support forums.

Characters and Direction

  • Lost a character somewhere on your set? Hover your mouse over their name in the Character Panel and a helpful blue arrow will appear over their head on set.
  • You don't have to "film" the entire movie as one movie. It can be easier, and will give you more options, to assemble individual scenes, and edit them together.
  • When placing characters in front of a photographic backdrop, be careful that they don't cast shadows where they're not wanted.
  • To make your actors as real and dramatic as possible, spend time assembling Gesture Sequences. Subtle gestures can really bring your character to life.
  • You can record your dialogue separately in another application and load the individual dialogue tracks into Moviestorm.
  • You can mix Moviestorm characters with footage from other applications by using "greenscreening" (also known as chroma-key): colour the floor green, and use the same colour green on a simple prop backdrop (or other props). You will now be able to use the chroma-key functions in your video editor.
  • Always remember - what matters is what the scene looks like through the camera lens. You may have to put actors in unnatural and unrealistic positions to make them look good in your movie – don't worry, this is normal film technique!
  • Is your character lip-syncing to a music track? You might get a more accurate result by recording yourself singing the track with no accompaniment. You can add the original track back in in post-production - nobody has to hear your version except you!
  • If you've built a set or a character you like, save them to your Stock. You can then use them again in other movies, or share them with other people. This can give you a large library of sets and characters quite quickly.

Release Version 1.1.2

Build Number: 14260

Release Version: 1.1.2

New features

  • Character walk paths can now be edited in the Director's View. Just scrub the timeline along to any point during the character's walk, shift-click and drag . The character will adapt her walk automatically to include the new point. In this way you can now easily ensure that your characters avoid each other or objects on set.
  • Shift-clicking a character on set in the Director's View and dragging them to another point on set will now create a walk for that character, exactly as if you had issued a Move here command. (Note that this is not the same as dragging a character's mark).
  • Apart from characters, Moviestorm now features moveable objects. Place the object on set in the set workshop, then go to the Directors View and use the same shift-drag mechanism as characters to create their movement path. The objects that are currently moveable are Bat, Bat_Flying, Ghost, Skulls, WitchesBroom, Snowmen, Skull, TV_Camera, Follow_Spot, Retro_Saucer, Shuttle and Vehicles.
  • Vehicles additionally follow some basic kinetic rules. The wheels rotate and turn and the car body will bank when turning. This is only the first step though - vehicles have a lot more functionality to come.
  • Trees now have a simple swaying motion to give them a little life. A future Moviestorm release will provide controls for the strength of the wind and the amount of sway.
  • The set object Customisation Panel now opens in a seperate (moveable) dialogue box.
  • Support for a new, component-based system for set object customisation. At present, only a few set objects (Tinsel, gifts and the Menorah, all from the Happy Holidays content pack) support components. More component-based set objects will be added in later Content Packs.
  • Groups of set objects can now be moved and rotated as one object. Shift-click an object in the Set Workshop View to add it to the selection group. The group can now be moved or rotated in just the same way as a single set object. We'll be expanding on the multiple-selection features in future releases.
  • Moviestormers with access to the Modder's Workshop (which is still in an invite-only Beta stage) can now import objects in Google SketchUp format (.skp).
  • Added Invisible to Camera versions of lamps (Lamp_Desk_01, Lamp_Small_01, Lamp_Tall_01) which can be selected as varients of the visable versions. These appear purple in the set workshop and directors view, but are invisible to the cameras. From the camera views, they just cast their light, allowing you to light a scene without having to show the lamps.
  • Male Long Hair added.
  • Updated trees to work with the Wind Sway.

Resolved issues

  • Changing material colours for set objects is now achieved by clicking the set object in Set Workshop View, and choosing _Change Colour_ from the (new) ring menu that appears. Certain set objects will also provide several texture variaitons, which can be accessed in the same way.
  • Customisable textures on set objects will now highlight on mouse-over.
  • Characters holding gun props can now aim at a target. Simply click your chosen target, and from the ring menu that appears choose _Aim at_ (instead of the usual _Point at_). Characters will automatically track their target if the target moves, and will cease aiming when appropriate (when putting their gun away, for instance).
  • Update Cupboard_01 (made tintable template)
  • Glasses lenses are now unselectable so that one can change eye colour on characters wearing glasses
  • Improved skinning on Shaved Hair for Female
  • Update to Male Sitdown and Standup animations

Known issues

  • Targeted camera shots can produce inconsistent results when targeted at characters.
  • The undo/redo functionality does not work when applied to vehicle movement commands.
  • All Modder's Workshop users must download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86). This library is used for the new SketchUp importer. The Modder's Workshop will no longer function without this library installed.
  • The Modder's Workshop does not currently save any changes made to morphable heads.
  • The SketchUp importer is not compatible with the new SketchUp 7 format. Use Save As from within SketchUp and choose SketchUp Version 6 as the output format.
  • When this update has finished, you may need to re-run the launcher before Moviestorm will start.
  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will crash every second time.
  • Mac users running MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard) may experience slow running of Moviestorm, caused by the graphics card overheating.
  • Walk paths through doors are not adjustable into curves. The explode walk function which should enable this is inconsistent in how well it works

Release Version 1.1.3

Build Number: 14507

Release Version: 1.1.3

Resolved issues

  • Fix for police car flashing lights in camera, cutting room and render views, so that they appear correctly.
  • Fix for Laser so that the Liquid Sky pattern is available again
  • Fix for the Lighting Rig so that it can be placed on set without generating errors
  • Explode walks (through doors) should work more reliably.

Known issues

  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will crash every second time.
  • Mac users running MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard) may experience slow running of Moviestorm, caused by the graphics card overheating.
  • Targeted camera shots can produce inconsistent results when targeted at characters.
  • The undo/redo functionality does not work when applied to vehicle movement commands.
  • The Modder's Workshop does not currently save any changes made to morphable heads.
  • Gestures or Improvisations can stop the Handcuffing activities from starting. If you encounter problems with trying to put in a Handcuff animation, try stopping the prisoner from improvising (using change mood, or by turning off improvisation for the whole scene via the script editor > settings tab).

Release Version 1.1.4

Build Number: 15038

Release Version: 1.1.4

New features

  • New 'Dead' stock mood, which turns off breathing, blinking, saccades and improvisations.
  • The Advanced Mood Customizer can now set a character's blinking and breathing rate and its UI has been slightly revised.
  • We have added support for components of buildings which 'snap' together to support the upcoming Town Buildings content pack.
  • Set objects in Set Workshop View now appear as translucent until placed on set.
  • New 'Reset camera' button added to Modder's Workshop, which centres the 3D view.

Resolved issues

  • Accessories (in Dressing Room) have customization options once again. Just click the accessory on the character model to cycle through the material options.
  • Wallpaper over window and door sections will no longer appear corrupted upon saving and loading a movie. If you have an existing movie in which the wallpaper is appearing incorrectly around a door or window, select the door or window in the Set Workshop View, and change to a different version of that door or window, and (optionally) back, before re-saving your set or movie.
  • When passing through doorways, characters can now use different gaits other than the default.
  • Characters should open doors correctly rather than walking to the wrong side of the door prior to opening it.

Known issues

  • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will crash every second time it is run.
  • Modders Workshop - A template, part or bodypart saved with a new name will sometimes not appear in the browser tree. The 'Refresh Browser' button should make the new file appear.
  • Modders Workshop - The Modder's Workshop will need to be restarted every time a set object is imported using the Sketchup Importer. The 'Refresh browser' button will cause the files to show up in the tree, but the model will not load.

Can I give copies of Moviestorm to other people?

Yes you can, within limits.

You can give copies of Moviestorm or any official Moviestorm Content Packs to your friends. They will have to register their copies of Moviestorm with us before they can use them. They’ll also need a licence for each Content Pack, which they will need to buy from the Marketplace.

You may not distribute Moviestorm or Moviestorm Content Packs publicly (e.g. on a Web site or a cover disk) without permission – please contact us if you plan to do so.

Who owns the movies I make in Moviestorm?

You do.

You have the right to distribute your movies wherever you like, or even to sell them provided they do not infringe anyone else’s rights (e.g. if you use 3rd party music).

All we require is that any movie you make using Moviestorm must contain a Moviestorm credit somewhere. You can either add your own credit, or download and use the Moviestorm lightning strike (available in pixel resolutions of 640×360, 800×450 and 1280×720).

Just to be 100% clear, you do not own the models, the animations, or anything else supplied with Moviestorm. These are licensed to you for your personal use only.

Will you be upgrading the software in the future?

Yes.

We issue frequent updates with new features and bug fixes. Moviestorm automatically downloads and installs updates when they're released.

We sometimes upgrade some of the official Content Packs, so if you’ve bought a Content Pack, you will get any upgrades to that pack for no extra cost as well.

Can I create and import my own props, items, clothes and so on?

The Moviestorm Modder’s Workshop tool enables you to import items from Google Sketchup as well as your own content. There's a very active forum for modders, and a number of third party sites where you can get mods made by other people.

The Modder's Workshop is not automatically supplied with Moviestorm - you have to ask us for it. Here's how to apply.

The Modder’s Workshop is currently still in Beta testing, and we don't support your mods. Find out more in the forum.

Can I import models or animations from other games?

No. This is not a supported feature and may constitute a copyright violation.

Can I edit the faces of my characters?

Yes.

Moviestorm includes a number of different faces. You can customise them by adding different hairstyles and other accessories.

Most faces also support morphing, which allows fine control over individual facial features, such as the size of the nose and the jawline. With some packs, you can completely change the faces using morphing - the recent monster head packs allow you to slide between normal human faces and full-on monsters.

Find out more about creating characters.

Can the characters run, and walk in different ways?

Yes.

The easy way to change the way your characters move is to select one of the ready-made "gaits", or walk styles. These include various different ways of walking and running,

You can customise these even further by adjusting the speed.

If you really want to go crazy, you can also blend two gaits together to create unique walk styles.

Can I get the characters to cry or smile?

Yes.

You can set a new mood for your character at any time during your movie. Mood changes affect the way your character stands and behaves as well as their facial expression.

You can pick a ready-made mood, or you can use the advanced mood generator to create unique behaviours.

Can I alter the height or size of the characters?

No. What you see is what you get. Sorry.

Can I decide where the actors move and what gestures they make, or are the scenes premade?

Absolutely. That's what Moviestorm is all about. You're the director. You make the decisions.

Find out more about directing.

Can I control the movement of the cameras?

Absolutely. Playing with the cameras is what film making is all about!

You can move the cameras, cut between them, and edit the footage. There are easy framing tools to get you going and help you achieve that cinematic look. For more advanced users, there are zoom and focus controls.

Find out more about using cameras.

Can I create my own sets?

Yes.

Moviestorm includes a complete set-building tool, the Set Workshop. You can build indoor or outdoor sets from scratch, or you can modify any of the existing stock sets. There are over 60 stock sets currently available.

If you're a subscriber, you can also use the Modder's Workshop to import buildings and other items from Google Sketchup or build them yourself in another 3D tool.

Find out more about set-building.

Can the characters speak?

Yes.

You can record the dialogue yourself or use pre-recorded audio files, and your characters will automatically lip-sync.

Text to speech is supported in Photostorm and Greetingstorm, but not in Moviestorm itself. This will be added in 2010.

There are a number of free text to speech systems which you can use to generate audio files and import into Moviestorm. There's a list in the forum of free software and other resources, maintained by our users.

Can I adjust the lighting?

Yes.

There are three types of lighting. You can change the strength, direction and colour of the on-set lighting.

You can then add on-set lights, such as table lamps, street lights, and ceiling lights.

And finally, for those extra special effects, some of the Content Packs include special lighting objects such as concert lighting rigs, spotlights, police flashers, fireworks and explosions. Check this out! (Video by supermep.)

What kind of Content Packs are available?

Most content packs contain a mixture of new sets, props, costumes, characters, animations, sounds and so on. Some are more specialised.

The current content packs include everyday clothes, hairstyles, and homes, cops, criminals, musicians, aliens, monsters, vehicles, buildings, music, special effects, spaceships, among other things.

The pages for the individual packs will give you a good idea of what's in each one and what you can do with it.

How often are new Content Packs available?

New content packs are released regularly. To give you an idea, we released 16 packs in 2009, as well as several addons like Photostorm containing free content.

Keep an eye on the forums, Moviestorm News, marketplace, Facebook site, or Twitter feed for news on upcoming and latest releases.

Domestic Drama 02 How-To Guide

This guide will help you get the most out of our Domestic Drama Bedrooms content pack.

Sets and Props

  • You can use the "jump to" command from a held prop's menu to jump straight to any activity, bypassing the usual required sequence.
  • You can apply floor and ceiling textures to walls if you really want to. Just use the selection drop-down box, and choose "All".
  • Leave the floor of the set as a grid until the last moment. You can then use the grid for positioning actors and set objects.
  • You don't need to build complete sets. You can often build three walls of a room, as the fourth wall may not be seen.
  • It's often easier to dress your set after you've done the bulk of the scene. That way, you only have to dress the bits that get seen, and you can set things up so they look good in your shots.
  • When you build a set, put in a simple prop somewhere where it won't be seen to check lighting and shadows.
  • You can make a street seem to be longer by angling the buildings slightly towards each other; this will accentuate the perspective effect.
  • If you rescale props, characters won't always be able to interact with them properly.
  • Uncheck "Use shaders" in the Graphics tab of the Moviestorm Settings screen when building sets and making the movie. This will free up valuable memory for actual production and will speed up the process. Turn shadows back on prior to rendering and make your lighting adjustments then.
  • You can paint a wall as many times as you like - just apply your new texture over the old one.
  • Hold down Alt when moving an object in the Set Workshop View to change the way it stacks on other objects - you can create interesting effects this way!
  • If you need an object to snap to a wall's alignment, but the final position of the object is too far away to snap to the wall, place the object so it's touching the wall. Moviestorm will rotate the object to match the wall's alignment. You can now move the object back into place, and it will keep the new alignment.

Camerawork

  • Close-ups can be really close. Watch a DVD with the sound off, and you'll see how often this is used in professional films.
  • Experiment with the subtle differences between the different types of camera shot so that you can use them most effectively.
  • If you want to create a static (unmoving) camera shot, choose a Free Shot.
  • Moviestorm Performance

    • Uncheck "Use shaders" in the Graphics tab of the Moviestorm Settings screen when building sets and making the movie. This will free up valuable memory for actual production and will speed up the process. Turn shadows back on prior to rendering and make your lighting adjustments then.
    • Exporting your movie can take several minutes. For best performance, turn off all other applications, and don't do anything else on your computer while it's rendering.
    • If you want to try some experiments with your movie, make a copy of it, and work on the copy. You can use the "Save As" command from the drop-down menu on the standard "Save" button.

Moviestorm’s cel-shading mode does not work correctly with certain models of Mac.

    Solution

    Do not use cel-shading mode.

    Moviestorm won’t shut down

Moviestorm sometimes fails to close correctly when run on an iMac. Unfortunately, force-quitting the application is the only option.

    Solution

Remember to always save your work before you attempt to quit Moviestorm. If Moviestorm does not respond to the Exit command, force-quit the application (Cmd-click the icon on the Dock and choose “Quit” or “Force Quit”).

    Vista Installation

We strongly recommend that existing Moviestorm users running Vista should reinstall Moviestorm rather than using the automatic patcher.

The Moviestorm installer provides Windows Vista user with two methods of running Moviestorm. Shortcuts to these two methods will appear in your Start Menu under the Moviestorm General Release folder, as Moviestorm and Moviestorm for non-admin users. We recommend that you run Moviestorm in Admin mode, by choosing the standard Moviestorm shortcut. When you click this shortcut, Vista’s User Account Control system will ask you to confirm your actions. At the prompt An unidentified program wants access to your computer, choose Allow: I trust this program. I know where it’s from or what it’s for. Moviestorm will now start (in Vista Admin mode).

If you want to run Moviestorm from a non-admin account, or without allowing elevated Admin privilages, then use the shortcut called Moviestorm for non-admin users. If you attempt to install updates or new content whilst in non-admin mode, Moviestorm will attempt to restart in Admin mode.

Note: If you use the Modder’s Workshop, or want to install any modded content packs using the Install button in the settings menu Addons tab, then please ensure you are using Moviestorm in Admin mode, otherwise the changes will not install correctly.

Uninstalling a pre-1.1 version of Moviestorm

Moviestorm can be uninstalled in the same way as any other program on your computer. When the uninstallation process has finished, you should open Windows Explorer, and navigate to the directory C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\[Moviestorm installation path] where [USERNAME] is your Vista username, and [Moviestorm installation path] is Program Files/Moviestorm if you installed Moviestorm to the default directory. You can safely delete everything in this directory.

The auto-updater isn’t getting me the latest version of Moviestorm

Likely cause: Your firewall is blocking the Moviestorm updater.

Solution: Check your firewall settings to ensure that Moviestorm has the correct permissions that allow Moviestorm to contact our server to download the latest update.

When I open Moviestorm and start a film I can see the controls, but can’t see the set or 3D sections

Likely cause: The drivers for your graphics card are not up to date. Windows Vista default graphics drivers are known to not work with Moviestorm.

    Solution: Update your graphics drivers.

I cannot load an existing film I was working on

Likely cause: If you see the message, “cause-exception: java.lang.NullPointerException”, Moviestorm is trying to use an asset which you no longer have. This can occur after a new version of Moviestorm has been released, or if you have changed or deleted any of the Moviestorm assets while modding.

Solution: Ensure you have an up to date version of Moviestorm.

Moviestorm appears to be running very slowly

Likely cause: Your shader settings are too high for your PC.

Solution: Turn off shaders in the settings panel of the main menu. This will increase system performance at the expense of graphical quality. For best performance, turn off shaders to create a movie, and turn them settings back on to render out at full quality.

Likely cause: You have a lot of characters on-screen or a very complex set.

Solution: Reduce the complexity of your scene.

How can I get more costumes and choices for the Dressing Room?

The exact options available to you in each tab of the Dressing Room will vary depending on the Content Packs you have installed. You can get more Moviestorm content from the Moviestorm Store.

My characters’ heads are floating around the set

Likely cause: Your graphics card can’t handle hardware skinning options. Some graphics cards will allow you to fully select all of our shader options even if they can’t cope with them.

Solution: Turn off hardware skinning from the Settings screen on the main menu.

Some parts of Moviestorm are not displaying correctly

Likely cause: Moviestorm is running in windowed mode, with part of the window off-screen.

Solution: If you’re running Moviestorm in windowed mode, make sure that the Moviestorm window is not partially off-screen. If you set your Moviestorm window to be partially outside the dimentions of your monitor, you may see display issues affecting character portraits, camera thumbnails, morphable heads and the movie export process.

There are no clips available to me in the Cutting Room View Clip Bin

Likely cause: You haven’t yet added any camera cuts.

Solution: Switch to the Camerawork View and make sure that your movie includes at least one camera cut.

How do I change camera shot types?

You can quickly and easily cycle through the three different types of camerashot.

    • To switch to a One Shot double-click a character through the current camera view.
    • To switch to a Targeted Shot, left-click a targetable object (or character) through the current camera view.
    • To switch to a Free Shot, left-click somewhere non-targetable (such as the ground) through the current camera view.

I can’t exit Delete mode or Clone mode in the Set Workshop View

Likely cause: The Clone mode and Delete mode in the Set Workshop View are persistant, which means that Moviestorm will remain in Clone or Delete modes until you exit the mode. This makes it easy to clone an object multiple times, or to delete several objects.

Solution: To exit Clone mode or Delete mode, simply right-click anywhere on set. You will also automatically exit these modes if you change Views, or if you choose another tool in the Set Workshop View.

Why are the walls of my set no longer visible?

Likely cause: You have switched from Set Workshop View to Director’s View.

Solution: The walls of your set will be displayed in full in the Set Workshop View. When you switch to the Director’s View, however, Moviestorm will hide the walls of the set to make it easier for you to direct the on-set action. Don’t worry – the walls are still there, and will show up in camerashots (and, therefore, in your final movie).

I can’t find my character on set

Likely cause: You have not yet placed your character on set.

Solution: In order to have a character partake in a scene, you must first of all place her on set. Left-click the ground anywhere on set, and choose Place here from the menu that appears. Your Currently Selected Character will appear on set, in the place you clicked.

Likely cause: Your character is currently outside your viewpoint.

Solution: If you have already placed your character in the scene, but not cannot locate her, double-click her name in the Character’s Pane on the Director’s View. Your viewpoint will move to focus on the character.

What’s the difference between set objects and personal props?

Any object that can be placed on set is a set object (more correctly termed set furniture or just furniture). Set objects are placed on set using the Add objects to the set button in the Set Workshop View.

A prop (personal property) is an object carried and used by a single character. You can give your character a prop by choosing Use prop from the character’s action menu in the Director’s View.

I’m trying to work in the Director’s View, but my character’s head fills the entire

Likely cause: Your viewpoint is zoomed in to your character.

Solution: Try zooming out using the mousewheel.

I’ve just rendered my movie to my hardrive, but I can’t find it

Each time you render a Moviestorm movie, you’re given the option of specifying a location on your hard drive for the finished file. If you simply accept the default value, your movie will be rendered to your Moviestorm User Directory.

    • For Windows XP>:
      C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Moviestorm\Movies\My Movie
(Where C is the drive on which Windows is installed, Your Name is your Windows username and My Movie is the name you gave this movie)
    • For Windows Vista:
      C:\Users\Your Name\Moviestorm\Movies\My Movie
(Where C is the drive on which Windows is installed, Your Name is your Windows username and My Movie is the name you gave this movie)
    • For Macintosh OS:
      /Users/Your Name/Moviestorm/Movies/My Movie
(Where Your Name is your MacOS login and My Movie is the name you gave this movie)

My camera will not follow my character

Likely cause: Your camera is set a Free Shot. As Free Shots have no targets, the camera will not follow your character if she moves around the set.

To make your camera follow your character, change the shot to a One Shot or a Targeted Shot.

I can’t record my voice in the Director’s View

Likely cause: Your computer does not have a correctly-functioning microphone.

Solution: Check that the microphone attached to your computer is functioning correctly. If you have an external microphone, check that the microphone is currently plugged in to the microphone audio jack. If you have a USB microphone, you may need to download and install the correct microphone drivers before the mic will work – your microphone manufacturer’s website should give you access to these drivers.

    Release version 1.1.5.1

    Resolved issues

    • Some movies created with Moviestorm version 1.1.4.1 did not load correctly with Moviestorm version 1.1.5; specifically, movies which featured a sound file attached to a loudspeaker set object. These movies will now load correctly.

    Release version 1.1.6

If your computer is above the minimum spec, you may want to increase the memory available to Moviestorm, so that it is less likely to run out of memory. Here's how.

    Build Number: 17037

    Release Version: Moviestorm 1.1.6

    New features

    • Modders workshop - added Wizard to retexture template-based objects.
    • Modders workshop - added Wizard to create wall, ceiling or floor materials.
    • The Moviestorm EULA has been updated, and a new EULA covering the user of the Modders Workshop has been added.
    • Modders workshop (PC only) - replaced sketchup import with Import Wizard for sketchup 6. This now allows interactive resizing and correctly creates thumbnails for the newly imported props.
    • Held Props are now customisable. When your character is holding a held prop (in the Director's View), either click on the character and select Customise Prop from the ring menu, or click on the held prop activity on the timeline, and select Customise [Name of Prop].
    • Support for upcoming content packs - morphable hairstyles and particle effects.
    • Cutting Room View: When adding audio, you may now select any of the audio within Moviestorm's content packs, by using the Insert Audio from: Content Pack tab.
    • You can now replace a stock set you have created by saving a new stock set with the same name.

    Resolved issues

    • Characters aiming a gun at an object below or above the normal horizontal aim should no longer stop aiming prior to firing.
    • Depth-of-field should no longer cause crashes.
    • Tintable materials with emissive or specular textures no longer lose their emissives and speculars after being tinted, saved and reloaded.
    • Modders workshop - Renaming materials now works correctly.
    • Changing face expression sliders in the Advanced Mood Customiser now provides direct visual feedback if the timeline marker is after the Mood Change activity.
    • Modders workshop now has a Close button.
    • The sound system now works better, allowing multiple occurrences of the same sound playing at the same time. This was previously causing significant problems with Police Cars.
    • Tinting objects or changing images on objects should now only affect the object being edited.
    • Looping 3D Sound on mobile objects (such as Police Cars) now works when playing from part-way through the motion.

    Known issues

    • The undo/redo functionality does not work with character or vehicle movement commands, when one changes the curve being followed by the character or vehicle.
    • Gestures or Improvisations can stop the Handcuffing activities from starting. If you encounter problems with trying to put in a Handcuff animation, try stopping the prisoner from improvising (using change mood, or by turning off improvisation for the whole scene via the script editor > settings tab).
    • No more support for pre-1.1 walk activities. Movies created prior to Moviestorm version 1.1 will not work with 1.1.6. Prior to updating you might be able to convert the Movie to use the updated walk system by going to the setting tab of the Script Editor, and selecting the 'Convert to new walks' button.
    • Reordering dutch tilt camera keyframes causes problems.
    • Moviestorm still has memory issues, although they should no longer be triggered by using the tag cloud. See forums for details as to how to increase the memory available to Moviestorm, if you have a computer above minimum spec.
    • Movies rendered directly from Moviestorm will play back without sound if played through Quicktime on a Mac.
    • When running Moviestorm on an Apple Mac Mini, the program will sometimes crash while being started.
    • Targeted camera shots can produce inconsistent results when targeted at characters.

    • Resolved issue where Moviestorm crashed to desktop when cancelling render.
    • Lens Flare now displays correctly in all views.

    Known issues

    • nVidia graphics adapters using the 190.38 revision drivers may experience distorted characters, non-rendering special effects (flame and particle effects), background terrain displayed as black and other display driver related issues. A partial solution to these problems is to uncheck the "Use Hardware Skinning" option in Moviestorm Settings under the "Graphics" tab, but this may reduce frame rate. We suggest rolling back to an earlier (or later) driver to completely resolve the issues.
    • PC: Custom Codec tab may cause Moviestorm to crash to desktop whilst accessing certain codecs. Please be sure to save regularly if you intend to output with a system codec.

    • The Moviestorm End-User Licence agreement has been updated. You can read the EULA by clicking the '?' Help button in Moviestorm. A copy of the EULA in HTML format can also be found in the directory to which Moviestorm was installed.

    • Playback of audio under Windows XP is now more reliable.
    • Moviestorm should no longer require a force-quit under certain Mac architecture.
    • Re-ordering camera keyframes which include Dutch Tilt will no longer cause Moviestorm to crash.
    • Activities no longer sometimes play back in the wrong order during first playback of a scene.
    • Uploading to YouTube directly from Moviestorm is now working again.
    • Moviestorm will no longer sometimes crash to desktop when an in-progress render is cancelled.

    Known issues

    • Shift-dragging a character in Director's View no longer creates Move commands.
    • Character walks will not work correctly if the character is moving through a door and the walk contains a waypoint.
    • Shift-dragging a character causes problems when clicking near to the character's head.

    • Filters on the Script View are not working correctly.
    • Frames are skipped in output files when rendering to WMV when certain codecs are installed.
    • Radeon X-1950 and some HD cards can experience rendering artifacts. These can sometimes be resolved by altering the Graphics Settings within Moviestorm.
    • Recently, two NVIDIA driver releases were tested to be incompatible with Movistorm. The driver version numbers were 190.38 and 190.62. With these drivers, you could expect to see the following graphical artifacts:
      - Character models deforming and warping during scene playback
      - Particle emitters (fireplaces, special effects, etc) not working at all
      - Terrain bowl around the set displaying as black
These issues are resolved with later NVIDIA drivers (ver. 191.07 onwards) and we we recommend against using the previous drivers in conjunction with Moviestorm.
    • Certain third-party codecs may cause instability when moving to the Publisher's View. We recommend saving your work before moving to the Publisher's View, and re-starting Moviestorm before continuing.

Can I use Moviestorm on more than one computer?

Yes. Your license is for you personally, so you can use it on as many computers as you like.

Once you've bought a content pack, you can install it on any computer where you have Moviestorm.

Can I collaborate with other people on a movie?

Absolutely! Most of the best movies are made by teams of people working together.

There's currently no support built into Moviestorm for collaborative working, so here are a few suggestions:

    • Get other people to record voices for you and send you the audio files.

    • Get other people to do music and sound for you and send you the audio files.

    • Send other people your footage and get them to add special visual effects.

    • You can send people your Moviestorm file and they can work on it, but they'll need licenses to all the content packs you're using in that movie, and while they're working on it, you mustn't make any changes to it yourself!

Where can I find out more?

To keep up to date with what we're doing, here are a few other places to check:

    • Forums - news from us as well as a very active community of users. They can often help you if you have problems.
    • Moviestorm news - what we're doing and other useful information.
    • Development blog - behind the scenes at Moviestorm, with occasional glimpses of what's coming up
    • Facebook - we have a growing fan site, where we post links to cool movies, useful resources, and news of what we're up to. (There are other Moviestorm Facebook groups too.)
    • Twitter - if you really want to know everything right as it happens, follow us!
    • Vimeo - the very best Moviestorm movies, mostly in high definition
    • YouTube - all our latest videos. You can search on "moviestorm" to find other Moviestorm movies too!
    • Flickr - send us your stills and videos!

Can I make a movie with the trial membership, or is it just a demo?

Yes, you can make complete movies with the trial version. It’s a complete product, not feature-limited in any way.

    What’s content rental?

Instead of buying content packs, you can choose to rent them by by the month for just a few Moviestorm Points (MSPs). A pack that costs 2000 MSPs to buy costs only 200 MSPs for a month. This is useful if you only need a pack for a few scenes or a single movie, or if you just want to try before you buy. If you're not making many movies, you'll probably find that by renting, the MSPs you get with your subscription will cover all your content needs. All of our first-party Content Packs are also available for a 7-day trial.

Do you store my credit card number and personal details?

    No.

When you make a payment to us (Short Fuze Limited), you’ll be redirected to Zuora’s or PayPal’s secure payment system.

    • All the data you enter on their site is encrypted before being sent from your browser to their server.
    • They do not send us any of the details you enter on their site.
    • We do not store any of your private payment information (such as credit card numbers).

Moviestorm is a processor-, memory- and graphics-intensive program. While it will run on most modern computer systems (both Mac and PC), we recommend that you refer to our system requirements to ensure that it will run smoothly on your machine.
If your graphics hardware does not meet our recommended specifications you may experience one or more of the following errors whilst using Moviestorm:
    • Lack of shadows on set.
    • Depth of Field not enabling.
    • Particle effects rendering incorrectly.
    • Lens flares not displaying.
    • Normal and Specular maps not displaying on characters and props (reduced quality textures).
    • Trees and other plants not swaying in the wind.
    • Weather effects not working.
If you experience any of these issues, please upgrade your hardware to meet the minimum requirements.

    Release Version 1.4

    Build Number: 25160

    Release Version: Moviestorm 1.4

    New features

    • The Dressing Room has been completely redesigned, and now features a far more flexible and powerful interface for designing your Moviestorm characters.
    • Dressing Room View: The Dressing Room now features a Randomize button, which you can use to quickly generate a random, interesting character. We've also added button to randomize just the character's face.
    • Dressing Room View: The Characters View has been entirely removed, and is now replaced by the new Dressing Room View. You can add new characters by accessing the Cast List using the button at the bottom left of the Dressing Room View.
    • Dressing Room View: You can now zoom in and out freely, using the mouse wheel.
    • Characters: The Universal Head is intended to replace all the heads from the previous Base and Core packs. It has a large number of morphable sliders to change the size and shape of different features, and allows you to change the race and skin tone. Also, characters may have different decals applied, changing their skin, skin detail, makeup, eyebrows, beards, or even adding other effects. Some decals can have their colour changed, and others can be moved around on the face.
    • With the introduction of the new Universal Head, old head models have now been moved to the new Spare Heads. All current Moviestorm users have automatically been granted a licence for this pack, so don't worry about where to get it - Moviestorm will download it for you automatically.
    • Set Workshop View: When placing a new wall, you'll now be able to see either a brick texture or a wallpaper texture. This shows which side of the wall is which - if you then put a window or fireplace in the wall, the inside will be the side that showed the wallpaper texture when you created the wall.
    • Cutting Room View: We've added an additional 3d preview option - amber/blue.
    • Color Chooser: when you change the color of anything, the Colors tab shows a color wheel, allowing you to easily pick a nice color. You can also choose a color from the Recent tab, to color-coordinate different things in your scene.
    • Lighting: in the lighting panel, you can now choose between 'Directional + Ambient' light (the old system), and the new 'Tri-Directional' lighting. This allows you to set four different colours for the directional light. You can achieve more tightly-controlled, dramatic lighting this way. We've included a handful of presets for common lighting scenarios, but you can specify a color and intensity for each of the light colors if you want to. You can also save your own lighting states as presets for use in other movies.
    • Lighting: Lighting direction is now controlled by a spherical control; click on it and drag it to change the direction and elevation of the light, and see how the new light direction illuminates the sphere, and the whole set, as you drag.
    • Lighting: You can now apply Cel-shading to individual scenes using the lighting panel. Cel-shading can still be applied to the whole movie as normal.
    • Modding: Verbs and Statemachine are now stored in AddOns. As a result, modders who make animated props, or animations for characters, can distribute verbs and states for those animations in their Addons.
    • Modding: Parts and bodyparts cannot be saved if they have duplicate material names; please change the names for materials so that they are different.
    • Help: The splash-screens that appear for each View the first time you run Moviestorm are now more detailed, and give a step-though guide to each View.
    • Help: We've redesigned Moviestorm's help system so that's it's simpler and more up-to-date. We've also included links to easily display the splash-screen guides again, if you've dismissed them.
    • Help: We've created a printable Cheat Sheet of common Moviestorm commands and actions. You can print it using the Print button at the bottom of any splash screen, or you can find it in the root directory of your Moviestorm installation folder as moviestorm_printable_cheatsheet.pdf. You'll need a PDF reader installed on your system to open this file. There are many free PDF readers available online, for both Mac OSX and Windows.
    • Cutting Room View: Added more variants for Titles and Credits.
    • BETA Director's View: The Director's View now features an Info display showing available actions for each object. Use the new interface button to trigger this display, or use the keyboard shortcut i. The Available actions display will not update automatically if you scrub the timeline, so remember to toggle it off and on again. This is a Beta feature, which will be expanded and improved with future releases of Moviestorm.
    • Customization windows will now remember their size and position when closed and reopened.
    • Saving and loading: The Save before exit dialog box has been redesigned to be clearer and less confusing.
    • Saving and loading: When you load a movie, it will now start in the same View you were using when you saved it.
    • Saving and loading: When loading a movie, you can now choose to sort your saved movies by either Modification time or File name.
    • Saving and loading: Saved movies will now autosave. You can choose how often this happens in the Settings menu. When you save, a backup of your previous save is also created. On the Load Movie screen, you can restore a saved movie that has an autosave or backup, so that when you load it, it will load an older version instead.
    • The Place here command when placing a character now has an accompanying Place here at the start of the scene.
    • Custom images added to set objects can now be removed, using the Reset button on the customizer.
    • Double-clicking a clip in the Cutting Room View clipbin window will now insert the clip at the current timeline position.
    • We've updated the default character skeletons so that characters' eyes look better.
    • We've updated some animations to reflect the new eye positions, and improved the eye reflection maps.
    • New default costume - Male shorts

    Resolved issues

    • Characters: Morphable heads should now correctly join up with the body so that there is no visible join.
    • Launcher: Content Packs will now be automatically enabled when installed through the Launcher.

    • Publisher's View: The Overwrite message which is displayed when rendering on top of an existing file is now far less confusing.
    • Cutting Room View: Character performance should no longer suffer adversely when editing a movie with multiple scenes and multiple doors.
    • Stock: Exporting a set to Stock will no longer include characters and marks with the save.
    • Additional data is now written to the application log (LOG.txt) when encountering missing resources.
    • Cutting Room View: Non-audio files can no longer be imported into the Cutting Room View audio clip-bin.
    • Improved transition time between Moviestorm's Views.
    • Set Workshop View: The No driver option can now be reselected after another driver option has been chosen for the Pickup Truck.

    • Cutting Room View: The Halftone Dots filter will now work correctly when used with overlaid credits.
    • Director's View: Clicking the Basic button on the Mood Customizer dialog will no longer cause the ring menu to be displayed.
