A difficult poll to answer, for two reasons.

Mac & PC

Two completely different systems; two completely different rendering methods: Real Time Vs. Interrupt & Priority.

People use what works for them, given their fiscal limitations.
What's produced is what matters. Adobe can't make shite shine laugh.gif

I use Sony Vegas because it was easy to use from the first day and the features available are very good. Much more in depth than Windows Movie Maker which I used to use.

I use Sony Vegas Pro 8 at the moment - recently got the update to 9 for a very nice price, but haven't tried it yet - and I'm very happy with it. It has loads of possibilities, easily incorporates third party effects, works very stable. Recommended!

Using Adobe Premiere right at the moment, especially since my fake Mac died. Getting an iMac once my student aid refund check comes around, and I'm a bit concerned over the change back to Final Cut, since I recall that the process of getting footage in there from MovieStorm was either a pain or had unnecessarily huge file sizes and unreasonably low resolution.

I'm also directing my first live-action film in the fall (10-12 minute short), which is why I wanted to move my stuff over to Final Cut and get a little more experience with it.

Actually, I did some research on the web and WMM got some pretty positive reviews.

And, as it was on my PC already and did everything I needed (apart from chroma keying - but then I found a forum that gave the xml code to write a chroma keying routine wink.gif ), it's a no-brainer at present.

The only downside seems to be the limited control of output formats...

So, just out of interest, why are the majority of peeps using Sony Vegas?

I'm using Vegas.
I felt that WMM was really restrictive, I didn't like the UI, and there was just something clunky about it. Years ago I had mucked around in a Ulead app, and I liked the way the multi-track timeline worked so I was looking for something like that. In addition, I wanted to something that worked the way I expected it to work which would mean little or no learning curve.
I found some online tutorials for Vegas which Sony had published and from what I could see it was a close match for what I was looking for. The thing that nailed it was that Amazon were doing a killer deal that weekend so I bought it (and yes, the price did go back up wink.gif )
So, that's why I bought it. And, I have to say, it didn't disappoint. It can do much, much more that I need it for, but stitching together clips from Moviestorm is very quick and easy and I'm pretty happy with the results.
One strange thing though, the Platinum edition that I bought came with a bunch of sample videos (explosions etc.) which Vegas won't actually recognise! They'll play in windows media player alright, but to get them into Vegas would require converting them. I assumed that there was something wrong with my install, but couldn't fix. When I contacted Sony's tech support the standard reply came back that some videos need you to purchase a CODEC from a third party. I'd tried explaining that these videos were on the Sony DVD, but I don't think their techie could read that far.

I have a Mac and use Final Cut Express HD because it's obviously better than iMovie and I spent money to buy it when I first bought my iMac. May as well use it, and I love it so far.

WMM is an awesome free app. It works well in place of nothing else, and occasionally I even use it to throw something together quick, but make no mistake, WMM compared to Vegas is like MS Paint to Photoshop. A serious filmmaker should probably look at getting something with more power, however, knowing that you used WMM to make the movies you've made (especially Gone in 30 Seconds) only makes me respect them more! laugh.gif

Actually tkd, Gone in 30 seconds is pure Moviestorm! laugh.gif

Incarcerated was put together with WMM. Okay, the version posted here came out 4:3, but that was put together before I found the widescreen output option (I never said WMM was easy to use blink.gif ). I've got a proper cut on vimeo, but I'm waiting for ShortFuze to tweak the loading page so that movies can be replaced rather than totally reposted.

I feel you on that, I've got re-made Clarks episodes that I'd like to re-upload here without having to add new movies. Also at Vimeo right now.

I have an older version of Vegas (8) . It does many things well. The more I use it, the more I find things I don't like and the more I find things I love.

Don't like: Masking and trimming can drift when mastering. I also find the credit roll to be a little akward.

Do like: many filters for audio and video. I also like the ease with which you can stretch or compress time, use fade curves, and greenscreen.

Another Vegas user here. I've got Vegas Pro 8.0.

I like it because its just a very flexible and easy to use program. I love the way the massive timeline and tracks work, and the "event" system that allows for very flexible editing. I also like how you can animate almost any property. I have yet to encounter something I wanted to do that was impossible in Vegas.

Last time I used WMM, it crashed. I was making a video greater than 3:00 and it couldn't take the pressure. So I dumped WMM and started to go out with Vegas. Beauty, eh?
